The Iron Claw - 8/10.  Basically the Raging Bull of pro wrestling, in that it uses wrestling to tell a drama but is less concerned about the wrestling and more about the drama.  Fritz Von Erich was an asshole, so the performance of him as the ultimate stage dad is rather well done.

Between Me and My Mind - 9/10

A.K.A. that documentary about Trey Anastasio, speak of the devil. I personally loved it and thought it was a thrillingly intimate portrait of him, on top of featuring various Phish tidbits I didn't know about (like his comment on how they structured their shows at Nectar's) and the makings of Ghosts of the Forest, one of many Phish-related things I still need to get into. If there's any nitpick I have with it, it's that it could've used a little more concert footage, maybe even from the shows to promote GotF. And having to rate this one feels unfair, because I doubt you're going to be interested in this if you're not a jam band fan. If you're even a little curious about the genre, check it out.

[and yes, this is going in the content ratings thread]

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin - 9/10.  Certified classic of Kung fu cinema.  If you want an old school kung fu film done right, it doesn’t get much better than Gordon Liu and the Shaw Bros.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom 9/10
Mortal Kombat Legends Cage Match 9/10 (Joel McHale is just the perfect voice for Johnny Cage.)
Five Night's at Freddy's 8/10 (Pretty good. I'll have to check out the games sometime.)
It Lives Inside 8/10
Tokyo Pop 9/10
A Silent Voice 6/10
Mavka the Forest Song 8/10 (It's a Ukrainian-made animated movie very similar in story to FernGully.)

Madame Web 7/10

That wasn't bad. Technically at least, it didn't have like a terrible plot or anything, so I don't really get why the critics roasted it. That said, I do totally understand why it bombed so big at the box office. Super hero fatigue is what some people are saying, but it barely qualifies as a super hero movie really. Also, I don't think people are tired of super hero stuff, just that there's so much of it out there now, people are only gonna wanna drag themselves to the theater and spend a bunch to see the really big, epic stuff. And in this case, they basically made a whole film out of just a side character. Her ability doesn't exactly lend itself well to being something that you can make a thrilling action movie out of either, so it's no surprise a lot of folks decided to give it a pass.

Wonka 9/10

I must have watched the original classic starring Gene Wilder like a gazillion times when I was a kid. I didn't care much for the remake, so I was kind of not expecting this to be that great either. So glad I was wrong. Even though it's a totally new story, right from the start they did a wonderful job of honoring the original. The music and sets were amazing, and I don't think anyone could of done a better job of playing a young Wonka probably than Timothee Chalamet managed to do.

Out of the twin pregnant nun movies out, The First Omen (8.5/10) edges out Immaculate (7/10) imo. First Omen goes slightly harder on the shock value, imagery, and implications of Catholicism as an evil institution.

  • The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - 4/10 This kinda fuckin' sucked.
  • Madame Web - 10/10 This sucked so bad it was funny.
  • Double Down - 20/10 Neil Breen is not a human being. But he is an American.
  • No Holds Barred - 2/10 I liked the guy named Dookie that shit himself and when Hulk Hogan asked what that smell was, he said it was dookie. Incredible.
  • Sudden Death - 6/10 Diehard on ice. Actually not too awful.
  • The Iron Claw - 7/10 Jesus fucking Christ that was depressing and then I found out they had to cut stuff out because the real life events were even sadder.

City Hunter 2024 - 7.5/10.  Pretty fun introduction to the characters with really good action scenes.  Definitely better than the Jackie Chan one if only because they want to do a proper City Hunter film.

Challengers - No, Zendaya does not get Eiffel Towered as the Brazzers-worthy promotional material would suggest (would have to be NC-17 box office poison for that kind of thing anyways), but it’s sultry, sensational, and possibly the only Guadagnino film worth jack shit.

One of the best of the year so far.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - Apes once again are compelling characters in their own right, which you don’t expect.  Still a lot of LOTR style walking scenes that probably sounded cooler than they were and feel like padding.  Still a solid 7/10.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die 7/10 - Did what needed to be done. A nice popcorn action movie that let me chill and not want to beat up the director for making it too damn long.

Spoiler:

Spoiler

I'm also totally not biased because of the return of my husband whose only crime was killing a bunch of people while being fine. He innocent.

I wouldn't suggest watching it without seeing 3.

Inside Out 2 - 9/10.

Spoiler

It was a fun movie but I liked the first one more.  Still enjoyed it a lot though

and I liked that it was more of a group movie than only two of the characters as mains

like the first movie.

I think I would have liked it more with the old voices.  I'm okay with Fear's new voice but

I don't think the new celebrity voicing Disgust was very good.  She sounded off to me.

Deadpool and Wolverine - 8/10

A farewell to the superhero movies that came before the MCU juggernaut that kind of knows Phase 4 was bleh and runs with it to its benefit.  Certainly a funnier fourth wall breaker than She-Hulk.

A Quiet Place Day One 7/10
Despicable Me 4 8/10
Kung Fu Panda 4 8/10
Boy Kills World 9/10 (That was... just insane. Incredible fight choreography. I loved how even though the main character doesn't speak, you get to hear his thoughts, basically imbuing the film with its own running commentary track, which at times is pretty hilarious.
Lisa Frankenstein 7/10 (Such a wacky concept behind this one. Reminded me of Sweeny Todd a lot. Basically a dark comedy with some 80s nostalgia splashed into it.)

Ride On 10/10

Jackie Chan at his best. I've only ever cried, like actually cried watching a movie like twice ever before. This was the third time. Second time it's been with a movie about a horse, so I guess it's not all that surprising. The other time was one about a dog. Obviously I have a soft spot when it comes to animals.

Even putting that all aside anyway, I still thought this was a great movie. Not the best action stuff he's ever done, but some of the best acting I'd say. The relationships between him and his daughter and him and the horse felt so sincere and real. Oh and then too, the way the movie kind of served as a tribute and paid homage really to his whole career as a stuntman. Just loved it.

Deadpool and Wolverine 8/10 (Enjoyed the cameos. Loved what I'll just call the slaughter bus scene. That was hysterical.)
Abigail 4/10 (Just not a big fan of vampire stuff generally I think.)
Arcadian 3/10 (The monsters in this were just too ridiculous looking to me. And the wheel thing they did just left me SMH.)
Cocaine Bear 9/10 (When I first heard of this movie, I was like "What?! ... No." But now I'm like, Yes Yes!)
Furiosa 7/10
IF 7/10
Twisters 6/10

Avengement - 7/10
First time I saw the summary and thumbnail I thought this would be substandard action trash, but Scott Adkins has done some good work so I gave it a shot. Glad I did. This movie was made with two distinctly different audiences in mind: the yoked up fitness orcs that sustain themselves on mindless violence and bad boy vibes and fans of campy movies which it achieves with a sort of turn and wink at the viewer style. Not a lot of depth to this one; this is just a fun movie. Would recommend watching this with a couple other people for a good time.

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice - 7.5/10.  I think Burton’s problem in a lot of his films is that he forces his Burtonness into projects that feel stiff as a result.  Here it’s much more natural Burton tropes and jokes, resulting in a movie that while not as funny as the first, is still plenty funny.  That and it was just nice to see a lot of these actors again (except the guy who played Charles in the first one because fuck him).

I also think if Burton sticks to his desire not to make a third movie, Warner will probably make a new cartoon.  So look forward to Beetlejuice is Loose  on Max in 2026.

Bettlejuice Beetlejuice 9/10 (Honestly can't believe I'd live to see the day that MacArthur Park could be so appropriately utilized in a movie and actually be made truly enjoyable to listen to. For some crazy reason my dad loved that old song, even though I always thought it was one of the weirdest things I'd ever heard. Anyway, 36 years after the original, all I got to say happily is... worth the wait.)
The Garfield Movie 8/10

Transformers One - 8.5/10.  A good, nay, a great Transformers movie after years of subpar Baysplosion fests.  The characters work, the animation is beautiful which is especially notable after years of godawful CG shows that were anything but, and the action is great without hurting your eyes.

Downfall - 9.5/10 - Gee, why would I want to watch a movie about a douchebag of a dictator and his ardent supporters facing their inevitable, well-deserved demise?  It's still one of the most powerful character studies of a deluded madman and his hardcore followers ever put to film.  The five stages of grief as dealt with by multiple people, and their ultimate choice on what to do when they reach acceptance.  It is a heavy, heavy film, but there is a strange comfort in seeing the delusions of this madman collapse.
