Shin Ultraman - 8.5/10 -

A really solid film whose main strength and weakness is the feeling that it’s three TV show episodes taped together, which I think is kind of the point.  It’s also the second part of Anno’s thematic Shin trilogy, which if Shin Godzilla is about man’s powerlessness before nature, this is about man’s attempt to work through that powerlessness and achieve something greater.  Between Shin Godzilla and this, I can’t wait for Shin Kamen Rider (which I presume Crunchyroll will distribute).

Grandmas boy.

So... i don't know how well this one aged. Got some funny parts, but in the end its honestly sort of the "pick on nerds, no we're nerds too so it's ok, actually we're not really nerds but we're talking like nerds so its ok." And "woman character is the prize for the main character" misogyny. I appreciated Jonah Hill's character dedicating a large portion of his screen time with his face in naked breasts, but i really wish it had been Shirley Jones and Nick Swardson instead.

It reminds me of an article I saw once about the difference between American and British cinema- essentially American old women in movies dont get to look "old". Its always "young and beautiful" or "young looking and beautiful".

Top Gun: Maverick 8/10

Execution-wise that was perfection, but I knock it a couple of points simply because the whole mission scenario seemed a bit too farteched and totally derivative of the first Star Wars movie. If you're going to copy off something though, I mean, at least they picked something really great to do it with.

Muppet Christmas Carol - 8.5/10.  A bizarre combination of fidelity to the original story and Muppet madness that works thanks to Michael Caine acting his ass off to bring it all together into a Christmas classic.

The Menu - 8/10.

An example of a film carried by its antagonist, if you can call Chef Slowick a full on antagonist (he stems closer to villain protagonist) whose skewering of haute cuisine is pretty damn funny.  Anna Taylor Joy is a good actress but she doesn’t get nearly enough to do until the end.

Spoiler

You’re going to want a cheeseburger at the end.

Creed III - 8.5/10

Michael B. Jordan was not lying.  He took the archetypal sports movie in Rocky and combined it with a shounen rivalry.  The end result is probably the equivalent to the higher tier Rocky films (3, Balboa, and Creed II) with some of the most creative fight choreography and filming I’ve ever seen in a boxing movie, more reminiscent of a fight in Hajime no Ippo than the previous Rocky films.  That said, it’s got some beats that are a bit underdeveloped, so it’s not Rocky I or Creed I.  (To be fair, those were both Oscar nominated with Rocky I Best Picture winner).

Puss In Boots The Last Wish 10/10

Purrrfect. Had to say it. Really though, just loved everything about that. Antonio Banderas... what can you say? The man's still got it. No doubt about it. Loved the choice in animation style they used, too... making it look and feel a bit more 2-D even though it's still 3-D. Excellent story as well.

The Menu 8/10

Really enjoyed that, though obviously it's such a far fetched crazy idea that could never happen in real life.  But hey, It's a satirical dark comedy, so in a way that's just another part of what makes it so laughable I guess.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - 7/10.

Spoiler

Still liked it even though it wasn't really a Ant-Man movie.

Glad I watched a review of the movie on YT and saw the trailer before I saw it.

Otherwise I would have been disappointed.  I wasn't expecting much so I wasn't disappointed.

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man is always cool and it was neat that one of the actors from The Good Place

was in the movie.  Never thought I'd see Bill Murray in a MCU movie.  Movie would have been better

with the original Cassie instead of the new actress that was in Detective Pikachu.  I don't like her.

Also would have been better with the funny guys from the first two Ant-Man movies and a better plot.

Cocaine Bear - 7/10

Fun monster movie that is ultimately a fairly standard take on the genre separated by its liberal use of black comedy and a few too many subplots for its own good.  It still works mostly because the Cocaine Bear is a surprisingly sympathetic monster and the dialog is good.  Also Ray Lilota seems to be having fun in his final movie.

Tetris - 8/10

Video game movies continue their march towards stuff that's actually kind of good with this Cold War thriller about getting everyone's favorite falling block game onto the Game Boy and to the entire world.  The main character having a genuine love for the game makes him a likable protagonist by default since he wants the world to see it, he just got into a massive clusterfuck on the way there.

Suzume 9/10

First time I've gone to watch a movie in an actual theater in like three years, but Shinkai's films are always so damn gorgeous, really felt like I had to take the opportunity to go see this on the big screen. Not at all disappointed either, though I didn't feel quite as wowed by this one as I did by Weathering With You or Your Name. Still, amazing visuals and fairly moving and emotional storyline.

Hunger - 7.5/10

Apparently “kitchen horror” is now a genre, as this Thai take on haute cuisine and the people paying for it being vapid idiots is both more optimistic and more cynical than The Menu.  The Menu is about a guy losing his passion and taking it out on morons, while Hunger is about people replacing their passion with elitism and cynicism, but at the same time saying the passion is worth fighting for.  It’s a more “conventional” film than The Menu.

Mario - 6.5/10, 7.5/10 if you see it in a fancy 4DX.  A perfectly serviceable but safe film that needed some more time to breathe and a bit more elaboration, but is never boring.  Yes, add a point if you watch it in the fancy theater with the moving seats because it turns a regular film into an amusement park ride of sorts and really contributes to the visual spectacle that the film wants to be.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie - 10/10.

Spoiler

Loved hearing the music from the original Super Mario Bros. games.  That, Mario playing a NES and seeing

Kid Icarus being played was all wonderful.  Loved the 80's songs as well and even though I've seen the Super Mario Bros.

ad several times now on YouTube, I still love it.  I'm so happy that Princess Toadstool's original VA had a line in that ad.

Looks like Yoshi will have a big part in the second movie.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 8/10

Didn't really feel much like D & D to me, but it was a fun watch.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 9/10

Gonna miss these misfits. Definitely left me feeling a bit melancholic. Great capper to their story. Still like the original the best, but this was right up there with it amongst my favorite Marvel movies.

Pastacolypse - 7/10

Fine movie.

Downloaded, and then promptly deleted Tubi just to watch it.

I’m just glad the return of Ozmo and ATHF has allowed Maiellaro to come out of his shell and create more stuff.

Sluggish in a lot of areas, but I still found myself invested.

Since I just watched a trilogy I'll rank all of them, found myself re-watching Indiana Jones, been years since I last watched it, been meaning too but always put it off for various reasons.

The Last Crusade: 9 -

Spoiler

Probably my favorite of the bunch, and I'll say it barely edges out the Ark, in large part because the duo of Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, and the almost perfect balance of comedy, action and adventure, the boat chase immediately comes to mind as a favorite sequence, as does the lead up to the venture with the trials, the beginning especially, is a lot of fun, from the start to when Indian gets his hat.

Raiders of the Lost Ark 9/10 -

Spoiler

As the one that started it all, it certain holds up and is a lot of fun, outside of Short Round, Marion is probably my favorite of his partners throughout these movies. The chemistry between her and Indiana is fun, not too over the top, she has the right amount of spunk and seems to get the better of him in some exchanges, to the point he can just grit his teeth and shake his head. It's the template for the rest of the series and that's not a bad thing, and that's part of what makes it so difficult to rate behind Crusade. Out of the bunch, I think this is the most action heavy, it's certainly got some of the most iconic scenes in the series.

Temple of Doom 8/10 -

Spoiler

There's a lot I like about this movie, Ke Huy Quan as Short Round, particularly love the mine-cart sequence at the end, but the rest of the movie seems to fall flat for me. I don't mind that it's darker, since I believe that as an adventurer Jones should have a few darker situations happening to him, but to me the pacing feels a little slow, especially at the start, I didn't find myself as invested as I did in the previous movies, however it picks up as the movie goes along. This one as I understand has a pretty contentious view, you either love it or you hate it, personally, I don't think it's that bad, it has it's positives.

Now I said trilogy, since these were the ones I managed to watch today, I'll be watching Kingdom of the Crystal Skull at some point in the future, that one I have a better memory on than the others, and I remember not really enjoying it, so we'll see if a watch today will change that opinion.

Shin Kamen Rider - 7.5/10.  A very trippy as hell feeling movie that is not as good as Shin Godzilla or Shin Ultraman, mostly because it feels like a big budget TV pilot rather than a set film experience.  The action was great but Anno’s reverence to the original is almost  to a fault here, with the effects and sounds clearly done to homage rather than retell.  It feels like if Wes Anderson made a superhero movie (it was a Hideaki Anno joint so make of that what you will).

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 7/10

Spoiler

I actually didn't mind this one, I think expectations got to me the first time. This time through watch, I ironically found that it met a lot of my expectations. Truth be told, it's very much the same as the rest of the series in terms of overall plot. It's more goofy than the rest of the movies, but I don't entirely mind that so much, because by this point Indiana Jones is already and established badass, he's naturally older. Do I think it's a needless sequel? Yeah I totally do, but for what it is as an Indiana Jones movie, it basically did what it needed to do and kept me entertained, while going over the top (man-eating ants, a sword fight on the top of two moving jeeps come to mind).

Harrison Ford is terrific as ever, it reminded me that in a lot of ways I feel he's sort-of underappreciated. Marion coming back was always a welcome addition. Shia LeBeof is a weird choice, but works in the cute young kid that can do the action scenes that Ford might not be able to do anymore, of course I say that when in the end, Mutt (Shia) comes across Jones' hat and is prepared to put it on, only for to reach down scoop it up, put it on his head as if to say "I'm not done yet, Jr." (And boy, do we know that to be true.)

All-in-all, it's not my favorite in the series by any stretch, it feels unneeded, but at the same time I think it delivers in a way you expect it to.

You Should Have Left - 3/10

Well I felt like watching a little horror and generally like finding new horror to watch that I haven't seen and Peacock seems pretty good for that.

Visually, I do like the movie, it's psychological horror and it generally manages to do that well. I feel like it gets a bit disjointed in practice though, and it holds back in moments where it should be more willing to go forward

Kevin Bacon is alright, he was never exactly high on my list of actors, Amanda Seyfried would probably fall into that list, I like some stuff that she's in but don't really care too much about others. Both do fine in the movie, with Amanda I would say being in about 1/3rd of the movie, naturally Kevin Bacon is the star of the show.

Spoiler

While I felt like it was kind of weak on the psychological side of things, and I found the story somewhat predictable, I did enjoy the overall plot as well as the ending. Jealously plays a large role in the overall plot, from Theo (Bacon) interaction with Susanna (Amanda), and his ex-wife that died under questionable circumstance, and the movie does well to circle back on that and I feel takes certain notes from The Shining, having Theo entering the house, and slowly finding that he can't leave it, and then circling back to the Theo who has already been trapped into the house, trying to warn his past self about the impending danger.

At one point in the movie Theo attempts to leave the house with his daughter (Susanna left because Theo assumed she was cheating on him and they had a fight), as they walk back toward the village the daughter turns and notices a black figure standing there watching them as they leave. They don't get anywhere however, as though they make the walk to the village, they find themselves backtracked to the house all over again. It's the end of the movie that reveals the Theo at the end of the movie that show was Theo and Theo was trying to warn him, until it was too late and he could no longer leave the house.

The revelations on the ex-wife's death ties in nice to the plot, Theo, who'd been miserable in the relationship, arrived home as she was drowning in the bathtub, and stood there and watched as she died.

All in all there are things I liked about this movie, but it's pretty average, can be super predictable, it's visually appealing, but it's not a movie I see myself coming back to.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - 7.5/10

Went to the theater this morning to see this and I enjoyed it a lot. Had a little trouble with certain plot elements, since I've never seen any of the Avengers movies. The acting was really good and the main plot was pretty easy to follow. My only complaints are the length (they could've cut probably 20 minutes), and that some (but not all) of the comedic scenes felt a little forced.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - 9/10.

Spoiler

Great movie.  The first one will always be my favorite but this one was still very good.

Loved seeing Rocket's back story.  I felt bad that he was hurt for most of the movie.

I missed seeing him with the others.

I'm surprised that Cosmo was a girl dog.  I thought she was a he since the first Guardians movie.

So awesome to see Howard the Duck again.  I wish he would get his own movie.  The first Howard the Duck

was a total bomb so it would be nice to see his character redeemed in his own movie.  I wonder how

Starlord will be coming back.  Is he getting his own movie or is Marvel adding him to a different Marvel movie

series?   It would be cool to see him in a new X-Men movie.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - 8/10.

Spoiler

Personally I liked the first one more.  I think the movie started out very well but as soon as

they brought up the canon idea and that it was fate for some people to be killed, they lost me.

I believe in free will and the idea of canon for the universes and a bunch of Spider-cops rubs me the wrong

way.

The start of the movie was great though.  Loved it.  Not happy that it ended with to be continued.

I like it better with each movie being its own thing.  Two parter worked with the Avengers but I don't think it works here.

The Flash - 6/10

Weird.  From top to bottom that movie was WEIRD with a capital W.  It’s essentially Warner going “blow it all up and let God sort it out” with their extended universe while having old serious Barry and Young Barry who I swear is just Ezra Miller trying to channel Dana Carvey’s Garth.  I actually feel like it’s another one of those meta textual movies with its moral being to let go of the SnyderVerse, but it is a weird path getting there.

Spoiler

Also to show that we’re never coming back to this universe, George Clooney is now Batman.  No, seriously.

Dungeons and Dragons - 7/10 Fun little movie. Wouldn't mind another one, also wouldn't mind it being the only one.

Across the Spiderverse - 8/10 Love the animation, another fun movie (mostly). Only complaint was the runtime since it was a cliffhanger.

Avatar: The Way of Water - 5/10 Some of this movie is drop dead gorgeous, some of it is not. The entire story was driving me mad and I hated the dialogue and weird/stupid direction parts of this film went with. How did this fucking thing make $2.3 billion at the box office? I call shenanigans.

Bros - 7/10 Did not expect this to be as funny as it was. Ben Stiller's cameo damn near floored me. Shame this one bombed but at the same time the way that that was handled by the writer/star did not help.

Bullet Train - 7/10 Another fun little movie. More like this, please. Trailers made it look god awful but I was pleasantly surprised with the movie itself.

The Menu - 6/10 It was fine, really, but I expected more from it. Well accustomed to the type of snobbery the movie was poking fun at but, like, that's exactly what I don't want to see, if that makes sense. Cool to see someone live out the chef's dream of killing annoying/pretentious customers, though!

Air - 6/10 You could do worse for a corporate biopic but if you thought this was one big advertisement for Nike as they jerk themselves off for being so great, then you were spot on. This would have worked so much better as a documentary that spliced in the Hollywood cast reenacting tidbits and having the real people react to said bits. Play the whole thing tongue and cheek, ya know? I'm thinking too much.

John Wick 4 - 6/10 The John Wick formula of action porn has finally glossed my eyes over. Saw this in theaters, got the collectible coin set, thought the movie was largely mediocre. Cool seeing Scott Adkins do martial arts in a fat suit and some of the shots, like the overhead with the dragon's breath one shot scene, were awesome. Hope any future films do not focus on John or rely so heavily on guns tbh.

Nope - 7/10 Solid movie. Had no fucking idea what it was about and it kinda hit me over the head with weird and unsettling shit but I can dig it.

Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness - 6/10 Please god make them stop. For every good scene in this I felt like there were a dozen lesser ones. Expected a lot more from this, as well, like, I don't know, more Multiverse shit?

I felt largely the same way about it. Except for the part about fate. Free will and choice are just an illusion of the mind as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, we're all fated to die, just a question of when.

Spoiler

The idea that the universe would unravel if a single individual doesn't do so at a certain specific time though is just plain silly, which is how come I really didn't like that anyone would ever accept such a notion for even a moment, let alone make it a key part of the story.

Fast X 8/10

Speaking of movies that end with to be continued... Is this suddenly like the new thing with these long running movie franchises? I mean, Spider-verse I can understand, but Fast and Furious have never done a two-parter before. Anyway, Jason Momoa makes such a crazy good villain in this, just as I expected he would, that I do not care one bit about them leaving off the movie on a cliffhanger, since it guarantees he'll be back for another film. Only thing that rubbed me the wrong way a bit about it was how...

Spoiler

every time Toretto pulls off some nearly impossible feat to thwart the villain's plan, he's like "oh no, I counting on that" and there's another trap he springs. I'm like, c'mon, how many times can you possibly foresee someone doing the unforeseeable?

Not sure I totally understand what's going on with that, but yeah, I can do that. Unless I'm mistaken though, doesn't look like I can vote until after midnight?

Invitation to a Murder (7/10) Solid little mystery movie, though a bit underwhelming. Guess I was kind of hoping for a bit more of a twist.
Operation Fortune (6/10) Decent action flick, but again was hoping for more of a surprise twist or something. Felt almost too easy for the good guys.
65 (9/10) Dino-mite! Okay, now this one really surprised me. May be the best movie I've ever seen featuring predominantly just two actors.

John Wick 4 (3/10) Definitely my least favorite of the series. Surprising too in that I liked the last one a lot. This one just felt like it was becoming almost a parody of itself though it got so ridiculous at times. I kept wondering where are the police? How can so much carnage be going on, often in public, and you never see any law enforcement? Apparently they simply don't exist I guess in the John Wick universe anymore.
