It’s not a Christian thing, it’s a flaw in all religions that some subgroups tend to exploit.  At some point, religions depend on the good will of their adherents, and the expectation is control structures like rituals and holy scriptures exist for those who need the regiment rather than those who are spiritually and intellectually more advanced.  It’s not ironic that Jesus became the thing he was railing against so much as inevitable.  You can’t oppress humans into being good people, but the controls need to be there because humans can’t all be trusted and, eventually those controls will be exploited by the untrustworthy.
