Batman coming to Toonami August 15th & August 22nd

“Toonami’s teaming up with DC FanDome to bring you two weeks of back-to-back DC animated movies! On August 15th, “Batman: Year One” kicks the night off at midnight. Then “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1” punches in at 1:30a. On August 22nd, “Batman: Gotham Knight” takes over at midnight. Followed by “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2” jumping in at 1:45a.

I wanted these movies to air...when they were new.  Especially The Dark Knight Returns, which would have made both the perfect piggyback and perfect thematic counterpoint to The Dark Knight Rises.

The boat has assuredly been missed.  But hey, these are widely considered the best of the DC Animated film lot (them and Under The Red Hood, which is getting sort of remade so I get why they’re not showing it) and DKR has Peter Weller as Bruce Wayne.  Robocop.  That’s pretty cool.  So bring on the Batman!

While this is pretty cool, I do kinda wish they had done ONE movie a night for 4 weeks instead. Sure, that would have meant JoJo at 1:30 again if Toonami began at Midnight, but the real question is: why even start DC Movies at Midnight? This deserves an 11 PM or even primetime start!

Other observations: this means regular lineup is likely again for 9/5 (Labor Day weekend) and Fire Force may be doubled-up at some point. Perhaps that October 24th date is somewhat fluid. Also, this will certainly slow Black Clover down, but DAMN, that's a lot of Batman!

It's cool and all, but I wish they picked something a little more recent like, say, Batman Ninja or maybe the TMNT crossover if that was even possible.

No idea about Ninja, which is amazing, but the TMNT/Batman movie was a joint DC/Nickelodeon production.  Nick probably draws the line at airing a movie they made on their direct competitor (as opposed to an On Demand service).

here's what confuses me....We've always been told that movies are too expensive for a one time air date and yet here we have two weeks of back to back movies

when they have a significantly worse budget this year

20 years' worth of block and we finally get Warner's animated stuff on here.  I love (the complete lack of) corporate synergy!

Honestly I'm pretty stoked about this.  Gotham Knight was fun enough for a not-quite-as-good Animatrix sort of thing, and I know The Dark Knight Returns was supposed to be fantastic.

it irritates me as well....it also messes around with the conclusion of The Fire Force S1 Rerun and the start date for fire force S2

there's no way they still hit that october 24th air-date unless they double up on episodes

Jojo Fans Had to wait so long for the part 5 dub to resume on toonami and now they have to wait three weeks after this saturday for it to return with the rest of the block...

I Wouldn't blame anyone who just decides to watch the rest of Part 5 Subtitled at this point

 It's difficult to think that everyone on this board can remember when we used to wait 6 months or longer for a dub; with how butthurt people get by having to wait a couple of weeks.

what the hell kind of statement is that?  that's talking like you are someone's grandpa

"Back in my day The Only way we saw anime was through bootleg VHS Tapes and we loved every minute of it! because there wasn't any other option.....Now Kids today have it too easy with these streaming services and blu-rays  They got no room to complain about any of it!"

i don't think it makes someone a whiny butt hurt loser to be annoyed

that after 8 or so weeks of being off the block  Jojo Returns to freshen up the block

only to disappear after two episodes and not be seen for three weeks(alongside the rest of the normal block)

all because warner wants to use the block to tell people "Tune Into Our awesome virtual convention Please!"

That’s pretty much DeMarco.

It doesn’t help that Viz is the last company to really hold off on streaming their dubs ASAP because of Toonami airings.

A sensible one.  If I were DeMarco I'd delay it by another year for the back sass. My point is just use some patience. Feels like every week I hear more crying about schedule delays. The "kids today" rant doesn't even make sense because you were around back then. It's not like waiting for something is a new concept for you. If you were 11 I could maybe understand the tantrum of wanting instant gratification.

Nobody's wanting instant gratification but not everyone   is a fan of Frank Miller's Fart Knight Returns....nobody wanted the block to turn into two straight weeks of batman fetish  just so Warner can promote it's stupid little virtual convention and a movie that's been stuck in limbo so long it's as much of a joke as the new mutants

I Suppose I'm in the minority then  for thinking Dark Knight Returns 1 and 2 weren't that great

wish i could feel the same about it as the majority and love it but i don't nor can i understand anyone's love for DKR either

so while I'll Probably tune in for Year one and gotham knight

i have zero interest in the dark knight returns

it is what it is and if you love those then more power to ya however i just don't care much about them

Well, I guess that's why Dark Knight Returns got stuck at 1:30/1:45.

But yeah, as awesome as this is, let's take a look at the lineup for 8/15 that would have been, that is now going to have to wait until 8/29:

  • Dragon Ball Super Episode 82 "Goku Must Pay! The Warrior of Justice Top Barges In!" - it's the surprising finish to the Tournament of Power, as its champion gets a surprising challenger. Take it or leave it, since it's a rerun.
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind "Green Tea and Sanctuary, Part 2" - REALLY!?! We're gonna cut JoJo off for 3 weeks in the middle of a cliffhanger!?
  • Fire Force "We Are Family" - Yeah, OK, this is probably the one I'm gonna miss the least.
  • Black Clover "The Devil Megicula" - Probably a good call that this one is gonna wait a while. I just hope the episode before doesn't have TOO much exposition on this new foe.
  • Ballmastrz 9009 Episodes 19 & 20 - Would have been good for completion's sake to go ahead and air them, but what the hell.
  • Naruto Shippuden "Crescent Moon Night" - Filler Hell episode. Could wait 3 weeks for all I care.
  • Samurai Jack "XCVI" - Really, SJ is episodic enough that it can wait!
  • Gemusetto Machu Picchu Episode 1B "Your Serve" - Is this show even going to be part of Toonami!? If so, it kinda sucks that its official Toonami run will be split by 3 weeks, but the Bat could easily kick Makasu's ass and y'all know it!

So really, JoJo is the only show that's gonna suffer at all.

it's just so annoying that after such a long wait to get back jojo part 5 back on the block  it's cut after airing just 2 episodes and has to wait until the 29th to air alongside the rest of the normal block

Ah come on, TOM didn't even use the "good guys still wear black" tag line for a Batman promo.

I hope this isn't the only promo they make for these movies.

True but I think in the context of Batman returning to Toonami "still wear black" would be more appropriate.

Anyhoo, we got a 30 second promo for Year One and a full minute promo for The Dark Knight Returns Part 1. Very nice!
