Let me give you guys a scenario

So let's say there's an intersection that's really confusing to begin with. Like it's been ranked one of, if not the, most dangerous intersections in the city because it's confusing. Then let's add some construction to make things worse.

At this intersection there are two roads off to the left. One is a 90 degree left turn and the other is a very slight left turn, hardly even a turn really your turn signal usually stays on after you make it. Because of the construction there are signs saying "no left turn" with a sign like this. ALSO note that the lane arrows on the ground at this intersection have one arrow to mark the 90 degree turn and a different one for the slight left turn.

Traffic is light so after yielding to an oncoming car, you make the slight left turn. You get pulled over immediately and see 2 other cars pulled over for the same thing in the span of time it takes for the officer to write the ticket. You also just made this same turn an hour ago without issue and without seeing anyone else pulled over.

How bullshit is that?

Wait, so in the time it took to get the ticket, two other cars got stopped....By what I'll assume is 2 different officers?

Are they just sitting there?.....Because I just wouldn't go there.

Yes. They knew it was confusing and people were going to make the same mistake

Sounds like you turned left when the sign said not to.

Best bet is to go to court and hope the officer doesn't show up.

If he does, don't fight it, just accept the fine and ask for probation and the chance to get the points off earlier.

Of course, if you have a bad record, you might need to ask for a work license if you end up suspended.

So it says no left turn and you turned left?

I'm not seeing how that's a trap... it didn't say "No left turn, but slight left turns are OK".

It's a trap because it's a confusing intersection to begin with and it was made even more confusing by the construction. Cops were literally camping out in the parking lot of the gas station on the corner waiting for people to turn and then going right back after they finished each ticket.

It's more confusing than it sounds

My record isn't bad but it's not 100% clean either.

I feel ya.  I mean you were definitely in the wrong, but that was also incorrectly installed road closure signage.  If there are three roads, then both intersections (considering the five way to be two intersections) have to have the no left turn sign or a non-passable barricade.  It might help to look up temporary signage requirements for your local jurisdiction, and to take that with you when you fight the ticket (along with pictures)

I tried to find the requirements but couldn't really find anything. Might try again tomorrow. I went back to that intersection later and took a video of it. Someone else was doing the same thing I did. Not that it makes myself or them right but I think the fact that so many people were doing it shows that it was pretty confusing to not just me.

I was gonna say sounds like a ticket trap.

They were camped out in the gas station parking lot. (see screen shot above)

They have better things they could be doing in that neighborhood but I guess this just makes them more money.

See if you can find a place that sells construction related literature.

Is it uncommon in this country for turn lanes (or any lanes, really) closed for construction to be PHYSICALLY closed? That's what they do here. Not only do they put up a sign, but also block off the whole lane at LEAST with orange cones, sometimes with some kind of other barrier. Even if the road itself is confusing, they make it perfectly obvious what lanes are closed.

My road was blocked off for almost 2 months...I had to drive like a mile out of the way on detour streets to get home.

But in this case, I assume that maybe the road can still be used from the opposite direction, just the left is illegal....Which yeah, I assume they could still block the lane.  I'm honestly not even too much interested in the blocking or lack of and more concerned with why people were trying it even with the police camping and other cars already pulled over.

I didn't even know crackdowns on illegal turning was a thing. I've only heard of crackdowns on DUI's and speeding. I would've thought people were being pulled over for one of those.
