why do we need an electorate branch of government. i think the electoral vote should be abolished.

and what do you mean 'understand' the 2 countries? they are in a race to be the greatest power in the world. and we are

busy trying to keep our lawn greener. so...i guess i just don't undertand what you mean.

We need the Electoral College to avoid "the tyranny of the majority".  Go ahead & look it up...or just think of something that was wrong, but believed by the majority to be proper at the time.

but i mean...is it actually working today? the last 10 years?

Just because something hasn't happened recently doesn't mean we should remove the stopgaps that make sure it doesn't happen again.  That would be like, I dunno, not having your kid vaccinated because Measles or Whooping Cough have been eradicated?

of course not. i guess i'm just still trying to understand why the electoral trumps the popular vote.

There are pros and cons of having a republic like representative election rather than a closer true democratic election. The biggest one is that in a large country such as this one with many different localized cultures representation of smaller states would be permanently dwarfed in comparison to a few larger states. The second is that multiple tiers of representation were set up in order to temper the diversity of representation as much as possible. This is most evident in the House of Representatives which the Democrats currently control. A very large percentage of the delegates in the house comes from a handful of the much larger states with huge urban populations. This is the basis of the Federalist system our country was founded upon.

It does have it's drawbacks, in that it tends to be much slower to make sweeping changes because of the strict consensus requirements. You could look at this as a positive if you are in favor of a smaller government overall. There are obviously other benefits and drawbacks, but this is the biggest two.

That's not a compelling argument when the point of said stopgap evaporated once all citizens were allowed to vote.

Also...

You don't need to tell people to look up something that they learned in high school government.

I attended 3 different HSs & the Government classes in each & it was never taught in any of them.  (Stupid local rules required that I take the course in the county the school was in)

So, basically, you had a substandard education.

I guess that's what happens when you go to school in the 30s.
