Expand For what it's worth: My older daughter had a friend in middle and high school who was an extremely bright kid (she was in the gifted program with my daughter, so she had a measured IQ of at least 130), extremely talented musician, singer, and actor. She was chased by colleges all through high school (she was on the radar because the gifted kids always took the SAT's in 7th grade), and got scholarship offers from quite a few really good schools. And it upset the hell out of her - she was mixed Pacific Islander, Native American, and African American, and she always questioned whether she was getting all these offers because of what she could do, or because of what she was. (Well on her way to being a career cynic at 14 or 15, she generally leaned toward the latter.)
