I think it tastes like soap

some people think it doesn't, and I'm genuinely curious

if one of the people who DOESN'T think it tastes like Soap, ate soap, would the soap, and the Cilantro, taste the same to them?

because they do to me

Sorry your genes won't allow you to enjoy the wonderful flavor of cilantro.

that article straight up says that Cilantro shares a few of the same chemicals used in making soap so I kinda feel like that validates the argument that it tastes like Soap

and if it doesn't taste like Soap what does it taste like?, the people that like it never seem to be able to answer that ('cept for Stillme who says it tastes Lemony and if that's the case I can just use Lemon Zest in it's place)

It's a genetic thing. And cilantro tastes wonderful. Soap tastes like soap.

okay but describe the actual taste of Cilantro as you experience it

because as I experience it it's this

if the taste were described in detail then other ingredients could be substituted that would result in the same flavor

I think it taste like lemon...

if that's the case then I don't see why I can't just use Lemon instead of Cilantro in recipies that call for it

Kinda bitter and pungent with grassy tones. Peppery, a little bit lemony, but sweet too. I don't know, it just tastes green and fresh, it's hard to describe because it's so aromatic. Honestly it reminds me of the flavor of hops in certain ways.

Some people's tongues taste certain compounds more strongly than others. There's another genetic variant that determines how much you notice bitterness, which could explain why some people hate coffee and beer so much.

It's not the same at all.

If you don't like cilantro just leave it out, nobody's forcing you to like something you don't like.

It might share certain chemicals with soap but it most assuredly doesn't taste like soap to me or most of the others in this thread.

so it tastes like Catnip or Shiso(beefsteak leaves)

I wouldn't know.

I recently tasted Shiso and I find it to taste just like what you described

**shrug**

I mostly was just curious if it was possible to substitute Cilantro with another herb and achive the same flavor and if that's how cilantro lovers experience the taste than I'd say based on the sound of it that some of the more exotic tasting members of the Mint and basil family like Shiso and catnip sound like they'd be decent substitutes

I don’t fall into the category of people that think it tastes like soap. It has a fresh earthy taste to it with some tang in the mix, like a combination of citrus peel and parsley. It also adds something nice to Mexican food and salads.

again, then if that's the case either a mix of Lemon Zest and parsley

or catnip or Shiso would be a good substitution (humans can actually eat Catnip)

also maybe Thyme because I find Thyme to taste like what you just described

Even if the flavor profiles somewhat match, lemon will always be a stronger taste to it. Cilantro meets you a little halfway with the tang so you’re not overwhelmed by using a lemon for tartness. Orange might fit the profile better, but cilantro also cuts out the middleman by not making you shower gritty orange zest over Italian parsley.

Catnip might be too earthy. I’ve had it in tea and that matches thyme or sage a little more than cilantro would. Can’t say I’ve had shiso.

Shiso (IMO anyway) tastes like a far more mild version of mint with a little bit of a citrus note to it

there's a minty element to Shiso but it tastes a bit more basily and citrusy

I've never ate it by itself so I'm not sure what it tastes like.
I can tell you though that I'm one of the people to who it doesn't taste like soap.

Cilantro tastes like soap to me also, but I love coriander seed. This makes no sense to me.

I hate Licorice but love Fennel, even though they have the same flavor

that ALSO makes no sense
