Devilman Crybaby

Anyway, I really don't know how to respond to this show. It was good, in some parts really good, but I'm going to have to rewatch it. I feel like I missed major stuff because the goddamn white subtitles with no virtually fucking border making it nearly impossible to read at some very important parts.

Yeah, he's also wrong about two other animes he and I watch

There were probably two(?) [significant] gay characters, but neither were the "Satan" one and... I mean,

this show ends badly for everyone. Everyone.

Like, I can see someone mistaking "Satan" for gay if they're trying really hard to force a character to be gay and aren't terribly bright.

Marking this because anything relating to "Satan" is a major spoiler, but I'll keep it pretty vague:

There's fucktons of sexuality in the show, and the "Satan" character is among the only ones to never show any romantic or sexual interest in anyone ever. The closest it comes is gaining the feeling of sadness over another person, but even then I don't think he really understood the concept of romance or had any sexual need. And the show didn't shy away from graphic sex, even same-sex (though it's not what you're looking for, that's for sure).

Like.... it's a good show, but to suggest it for gay relationships is.... very tone deaf.

as a disclaimer he IS one of my Tumblr Friends.....and....I'm willing to Admit tumblr people are even more desperate for Gay characters than I am, I've reached a point where I favor anime with NO gay characters becase they're always so offensive

he's like I was a few years ago, willing to assume any and all characters that are coded as gay are, ignoring that the series end with said characters paired off with girls

I would honestly rather a series have every character be straight so I don't have to accept that Japan thinks all gay people are hideous rapists

There's at least 1 legitimate gay character who is shown having sex with another guy, and a girl who's at least bi, but there's the whole....

Uh....

Big, end of show spoiler:

everyone dies

thing.

So.... yeah. :|

if literally everyone dies it's okay IMO

if only they gay characters die is when I take issue

still, I would rather Japan just not try to represent gay people since they suck so bad at treating gay people like people

Eh.... I did mark that because it's a pretty big spoiler.

Anyway, Masaaki handles things like that pretty well. He doesn't really do many caricatures, despite most of his stuff being filled with weird characters.

it's not that big of a spoiler, "everyone dies" plots are pretty common in Judeo Christian themed anime

It is a huge spoiler if you’ve never heard of the series before and it isn’t revealed in the first episode.

If Devilman Crybaby didn’t mention everyone dying by the first episode, it is a spoiler because we wouldn’t know what happens until the end.

It doesn’t matter if it’s inspired by the Bible. The texts have appeared and shown up in all kinds of anime and cartoons that don’t end with the entire cast dying.

Just to confirm, this is the same Devilman that had movie where he got his powers from going to a dance club that hosted a literal demonic blood orgy?

Yes, and very minor spoiler, the demon raves/orgies are back.

There’s a 70’s TV show that’s only really the base concept, two OVA’s, neither of which adapted the actual ending, and a crossover with Cyborg 009.

This is the first 1:1 adaptation of the manga, with elements updated for the modern day.

I read the manga, so I pretty much knew how it was going to end before the series even came out. And the ending is perfect for the story that was being told.

What I REALLY hope for after this is that Netflix works on other Go Nagai series. I'd love to see a fully fledged series centered around the world of Violence Jack.

I remember the one movie sort of making sense, and the other one making almost no sense, at least to me.  And I swear there was one other one that I started watching that wasnt the 009 crossover, but it made absolutely no sense so I stopped watching it.

Again, I saw these bootlegged on youtube, so its possible things were missing or whatever.

Finished it the first day it was out (or that night) and loved it.

I'd say Ryo is pretty clearly gay.

His whole goal with having Akira fuse with Amon and becoming Devilman was so that he would be able to survive he apocalypse Satan was planning to instigate, so that they could live together on a post-human Earth.

I've heard the manga made it more explicit, though I haven't read it. Probably still the intent.

Still, going for a gay suggestion on Ryo rather than Koda or Miko is kinda... wut?

Koda and Miko were already mentioned in the thread though, even if not by name.

But demons, puberty, and homosexuality are all very closely tied in Devilman, from what I can tell that's been the case since it first came out.

It's actually confirmed in other manga. In Amon: The Darkside of Devilman

Ryo explicitly explains to a character that he's willing to destroy the world so he can be with Akira, because he loves him.

Alright so, buying that I now know the series DOES have at least one (arguably more than one) legitimately gay character who ISN'T a stereotype (as revealed by a VERY explicit gay sex scene where said character gets fucked in the ass)

I will cautiously consider this anime to be a step in the right direction in that aspect

however, I think the next step should be an anime where the gay character is a nice person and actually gets to fucking live

And those were great.

You also forgot south park

at the time they were considered "acceptable"

now-a-days actively equating homosexuality with sin and debauchery isn't really considered okay,

because it's a coy way of making the concept of being gay seem threatening to a straight audience

There’s both same and opposite sex relationships in the show.  That’s not the issue.   The issue is how people connect, and the issues with communication.

Besides, the orgy being profane was because of the nudity and tons of drugs.

I mean, there's also a pretty explicit orgy in the first episode where both women and men are seen with same-sex partners.

other than for the sake of mass desensitization I don't consider orgies to be great gay representation

showing a healthy same sex romance and making it clear that there's no difference between heterosexual love and homosexual love is more what I look for in terms of progressive gay representation

basically this series could be called "poor communications skills kill: the anime"

personally I am VERY glad that this anime doesn't portray the gay couple as gross rapist drag queens but as ordinary men who happen to be fucking, if another anime could just portray a gay couple that way but give them a HAPPY ending I would be content

I'm literally afraid to watch this.

Despite the fact that it got the Toonami seal of approval in an Episode of Pre-Flight.

Though those guys are probably like "Dear GOD, how could we EVER air this!?"

And to be honest, I really don't get Netflix' "binge-forward; all-at-once" model at all. Why even bother to release this as 10 25-minute episodes if you're just releasing all 10 at the same time? Why not just make it 2 125-minute movies instead? You confuse me, Netflix!

The orgy also has straight couples, so there's not really any difference there?

Literally nobody gets a happy ending in this show.

i'm aware, which is why I'm largely okay with the gay characters dieing, because if EVERYONE dies it's not like the gay characters were targeted specifically, since nobody was allowed to live or have a happy ending,

that isn't my point

my point is that I personally think we need a positive story that includes gay characters as well, and I'm still waiting on such a story (arguably Yuri on ice fits that bill already but YOI's director claims she wasn't allowed to make it as overt as she would have liked)

Imagine trying to clean that ceiling afterwards.

Oh no, they could never. Way too many nipples.

I can only imagine the HORROR that the people who think Panty and Stocking is too porny for TV must've felt when they watched this show
