i wish jerky didn't have so much goddamn sodium

Sodium isn't really bad for you. Infinitely, infinitely, infinitely better to binge on sodium every so often than it is to binge on sugar, which everyone already puts too much of in their bodies to begin with.

cutting back on sugar and sodium is really fucking hard. literally EVERYTHING has sodium or sugar in it. even the hippie dippie organic schmoganic expensive grocery story has unhealthy garbage in it. somewhat less unhealthy than the local walmart, but hey at least it's organic garbage.

My folks gave me a bag of zucchini and cucumbers.

 

No sodium therein.

i can't eat veggies straight. i know people who can just eat celery or something like that but i'd need peanut butter with it otherwise it tastes like shit

i'm trying to get down to 135 and my body just won't do let me lose this damn fat. jerky's not healthy but it's got more texture than just plain trail mix

Sodium doesn't make you gain fat. Sugar does. There's no reason to cut sodium out of your diet if you're trying to lose fat.

"Organic" is really just a buzzword. Save your wallet and just buy standard produce.

CICO, bro. As long as you're eating less calories than you're burning you should be able to lose weight. Healthier food is better because it's more filling so it's easier to eat less, but you could theoretically lose weight eating nothing but McDonald's as long as you're consuming less calories than you burn.. Sodium may make you retain some water weight but as long as you're staying hydrated it shouldn't be a huge issue. Are you tracking your calorie intake? It's easy to eat more than you think you are if you're not tracking. That's especially true if you're less active, shorter, or weigh less to begin with because all of those things lower your BMR.

Eh yeah but it's a lot easier and quicker to reverse the adverse effects of long-term over consumption of sodium than sugar, you just abstain from salty foods and eat right and flush all the toxins out by drinking a lot of water for a lil while. Something ya really should do periodically anyway for general health. With regard to damage done to your body sodium and sugar shouldn't even be in the same conversation, especially if that convo is about losing fat.

i'm trying to lose fat but gain lean muscle. i've gained weight since i started the gym, which is to be expected. but i think some of it is fat too. i went from 132 to 140 but i haven't been at the gym for long enough for that all to be muscle

Fun fact jerky was originally meant to be soaked or boiled in water to soften the meat and flavor broth. Most people's teeth were too bad back then to chew hard dried jerky. The whole point of even having jerky was that it was a way to keep meet from going bad before refrigeration. As well dried foods are lighter than the fresh counterparts allowing you to carry more food on go.

As someone who's genetically predisposed to high blood pressure and other related things, I'm honestly far more concerned about too much sodium than I am eating too many cookies.  And I hate to tell you, but drinking a bunch of water doesn't magically clear up hypertension.

Make your own.

 

this. it's time consuming but really easy and you can control the sodium.

 

basically, buy a cheap cut of low fat meat like london broil. slice it super thin. marinate (low sodium soy sauce and whatever seasonings you like)

 

put the strips on a rack and stick them in the oven at low temp for a long time. think 150-200 degrees for like 4 hours.

 

(make sure you put something under the rack to catch the drippings.)
