2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences
scoobdog replied to NewBluntsworth's topic in Current Events
Seriously, I think Distrorted's reasoning is no different than Nabs - he'e more interested in razing the entire political establishment and building it back in an ideal image he hasn't actually formulated yet. There are few key markers that indicate this: (1) the fact he goes after liberals more aggressively than conservatives, (2) his shared belief in the main stream media conspiracy complex, and (3) his insistence that the masses on both sides are "brainwashed." He's not particularly unique in being frustrated that the current system doesn't have the implements to alter human behavior, and, like most such malcontents, he conveniently forgets that the idiosyncratic devices that have given a comparative minority outsized power are invaluable when the majority harbors problematic behavior. The government we have right now is specifically designed to compensate for populism; the evidence of that is the very people who are in a position to exploit the system have repeatedly sought to undermine it and overturn it when those exploits fail. Most people would agree that having a system like that isn't just a sign of weakness, but a tacit admission that human beings are fallible. Where Distorted might differ from the rest of us is that he lacks empathy. While we can calculate the risk of government collapse to include the millions of underserved and underrepresented people, he can not. For him, there is no down side to voting for a candidate that has no chance of winning because, like with conservatives that embrace a demagog Trump, the people who suffer most from a collapse are just numbers. It's been a huge problem with Democrats for years, negotiating a coexistence between a party that includes a lot of disparate and disagreeing voices while still creating a unified platform to enact effective and comparatively harmless legislation. He might say it's pointless to bash Republicans because everyone does it, but he really chooses to back Democrats more because they listen to people that disagree with him and expect him to sacrifice for the greater good. It's goes hand-in-hand with the idea that major news outlets are conspiring to suppress voices, and it all leads to the idea that its easier to digest a world where opinions don't matter as much as achieving the one objectively true goal. -

None of that is a solution. All of that is you essentially saying “find someone with a solution and support them by giving them your money and a hearty thumbs up.” -

I would have been sure cops can’t pull you over for having your hands in the wrong position. But, I also would not have thought it possible to punch oneself in the balls while flipping a bitch.

He removed his team from the league. I turned it into an auto-renew league last year so, unless you pull your team out, you stay in the league. He's the defending champ too, I believe. -

Aw... man. Nah. You've mentioned on many occasions that you can't do it, so it's all good. We would have been fine but our returning champ Gman pulls out of the league for some reason so now we're fucked up. -

Bump. Is anyone interested in joining the UEMB's fantasy football league? One of last year's participants backed out and we are now short one team. Can't run a draft unless we have an even number of teams. -

It's also worth noting that RFKJr's blatant and shameless play to peddle his supporters for a position in either government does not come without risk. Presumably, the nutcases that adhere to his anti-vax rhetoric would appreciate him being a part of government and follow him to whoever promises him a position. However, those who are attracted to his pursuit of environmental issues will almost certainly not follow him to climate denier Trump. -

I'm sure he was siphoning votes primarily from conservatives, but that doesn't mean Trump was a second option for those voters. He was at his peak when Trump was facing a moribund Biden campaign. We don't really know if the decline from RFK's popularity high, modest as it was, has already resulted in a boost to Harris since more detailed revelations of RFK's sordid past and subsequent implosion has run somewhat concurrent with Biden leaving and Harris entering the race and fueling enthusiasm. -
What broke? It looks to me that there was a metal bar embedded into the case that the circular hinge attached to. It a bit blurry so I can't tell if the case itself broke or the hinge on screen bezel broke,

You're shifting the goal posts: you specifically said that the "quiet part" was Hamas ceasing to exist: In fact, Netanyahu hasn't just explicitly stated this from the beginning, it's been stated by the Israeli government for as long as Hamas has been in existence. They have never "allowed" Hamas to exist, they simply can't eradicate it. But, that aside, Netanyahu didn't have to say there was no hostage deal planned because the goal all along had been to eliminate Hamas. Now that the unrealistic goal has failed in spectacular fashion, he is stuck with a bad negotiating position - he does not have the option to not negotiate for hostage release until all of the hostages are rescued or, more likely, recovered. He already has the victims' families breathing down his neck and he's facing an increasingly fractured coalition. If he says that no deal is possible for getting the hostages back, he's effectively doomed.

There are two judges, with past champions getting the priority. Last time, I kind of used the judges as a back up because I didn't have a lot of confidence that we would get board participation. This time, we're changing the role slightly. During the team round, the judges will still decide which member of each team is the MVP for the round and that person gets bonus points on top of those earned by the team. During the individual knockout rounds, each judge gets one vote for the contestants that move on to the next round, and the board collectively gets one vote. I do not. Last time, the challenges were formulated by committee because that shit is hard. We'll use some of the same events (not the same prompts), but I'd like to come up with new events as well.
