I gotta say - there's nothing worse than finding a surprise hill to go up and down. Even us natives don't really think of LA as being built on hills, but it is. Some of the hills behind downtown and adjacent to the ravine (where Dodger Stadium is) are steep as hell. My gf used to live on one of those streets where it starts out with a mild incline, then, at the very end where the road ends in a T intersection, it's suddenly a 20% uphill. Some of the back streets in Silver Lake and Chinatown are worse than anything you'ld ever see SF, including Lombard.
