I think it most likely that he simply underestimated the response he was going to get by invading, and he got cornered. He seized the Crimea only a few years ago with little resistance and only a marginal response from the West. The amount of weapons pouring into the Ukraine have certainly changed the tide in a drastic way... enabling the undermanned Ukrainian forces to be more effective and to bolster public resistance. It can't be overstated how the West's response to Russia's provocations were far more unified and resilient than anyone would have expected.

Most people don't "realize their mortality" by starting a psychotic and a potentially world war. Desperation has to be coming from a more immediate cause.
