Different people have different values. Most would agree with that sentiment. Some, apparently, do not. On survival, to live any kind of life, you must first be alive. It is generally not the goal itself, but rather a necessary condition for almost all other goals. It is certainly not something worth a great deal of celebration over, but neither is it something to be so casually dismissed.

The better is question is why would someone (likely a man, given your premise, but We'll leave it more general) be compelled not to?

You can survive with another job, one which for whatever reason does not require you sacrifice your mental health for it. Granted, survival is also a possibility by persisting in your current situation- one may look at the life of amputees to note how one can make do foregoing full functionality. But which of those lives is more worth living?

Everything.

By and large, it changes nothing. All the quandaries and pursuits of today remain mostly as they are, with perhaps some slight shifts in terminology. The chief difference is that the search for purpose now carries with it the specter of a looming intergalactic war.
