It's supposed to help decrease the size of their fatty livers, but everyone on the show is so fat that even 3000 calories would suffice for that reason, and they'd still lose over 20 pounds a month. I think a better approach would be to start at 3000 calories, taper down to 2500 for months 3 and 4, and 2000 from month 5 onward. It helps them create long term healthy habits this way. Almost no one succeeds at the 1200-calorie diet, and I think it enforces black and white thinking, which is a huge part of the problem.
