Okay Time To Guess what will be Assassination Classroom's Replacement?

Recommended Posts

Personally I'd want something I wouldn't have possibly expected, which after the FUNiRoll merger could be anything. But I'll go with my surefire conjecture of either Yashahime S2 or Food Wars S5, because those are the most realistic choices based on our current options.

I'd say Food Wars(especially since the season 5 dub has been on hbomax for awhile now)

Yashahime S2 might replace Primal reruns if S2 isn't ready yet

Probably Food Wars or YashaHime but maybe another Sentai series. They are currently dubbing The Executioner and Her Way of Life and Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor, they'd be fresh dubs that would be nice to have on the block. Executioner wouldn't be a dub premiere but maybe Kaiji could be. A safer pick from Sentai would be the shounen adventure series Ushio & Tora if they are even aware of it.

My theories are below:

For whatever reason, they can only premiere ONE Sentai show at a time, and right now that's Lupin III. Either Food Wars Season 5 or Made In Abyss Season 2 will probably replace it.

Viz's contract with Hulu for Yashahime has an exclusivity clause for each season's entire run plus 90 days afterward. That's why Season 1 showed up at the end of June, replacing The Promised Neverland Season 2. If I'm right, it will replace Ass Class, but something seems to be a little off. Ass Class has 4 episodes left, which would mean it ends June 11th. The only thing that would extend it to June 18th is a marathon of something next week...

The other problem with my theory is that Yashahime has never gotten topicals. Would it if it replaced Ass Class, which shocked us by having ITS topicals return following Shenmue? Will Primal Season 2 premiere on Toonami? And what about Housing Complex C? So many unanswered questions...

Just kidding it's new and popular.

Does Demarco really need to air another show with rape in it?

DeMarco implied he asked for it during S1 and Crunchyroll turned him down IIRC.

LOL that is pretty funny if Demarco actually tried to get Shield Hero.

Why are you assuming there can only be one Sentai show at a time?  I doubt there is some rule about that.  Probably just because Sentai is a smaller licensor.  But now that Crunchyroll doesn't want to play ball AND Funimation got merged into it, in addition to others seemingly not wanting to to business with Toonami as much anymore, Toonami may be forced to get more shows from Sentai, possibly even more than one at a time.

Hulu had an exclusivity clause on Yashahime?  But it was on Funimation Now too, and probably other places.  I didn't watch it on Hulu, since it has commercials on there.  Anyway, I'd much rather have Yashahime back before Food Wars, but if we HAVE to air the rest of Food Wars, may as well rip the band-aid off I guess.  Still, I would be surprised to see Food Wars lead the block.

Jman beat me to the joke, but man, I really hopes it's not NOTHING.  And not a rerun either, because that's pretty much the same as nothing as far as I'm concerned.

I actually just started watching Ass Class (don't even think about making a porn joke with this abbreviation you sick fuck) 2 days ago and I've blown through 10 episodes already.

Don't know what put me off from actually sitting down and watching it initially. Maybe I thought it was solely a gag manga/anime? Believe it or not it was the next episode previews that have been playing on AS almost all the time that got me interested and color me surprised, there's some layers to this show.

As far as realistic picks are concerned, I'm going with the crowd: definitely gonna be more Food Wars! or YashaHime.

If neither budget nor corporate snobbery were issues, my pick would be Golden Kamuy. It's a pretty long show (three seasons and a forth coming soon, not to mention the manga just ended so it might get a rare complete adaptation), and I've been meaning to watch it again for the dub. Alternatively, they could get anything and everything from Sentai. DanMachi's probably the longest show they have that would be worthy for the block (it too has a fourth season coming, plus that existing spin-off), or I could march to the beat of a different drum and ask for stuff like Kaiji.

Oh, and spurred by the recent announcement of Rick and Morty: The Anime, I've got a "fuck you" pick: Symphogear. Subbed, of course. This show is built to be aired at 3:00 a.m. and soak up crazed reactions from Internet denizens who don't know better. Not to mention, we need Discotek to make a splash on the block.

Pushing further into AC.

Wanted to add a sincere LOL at Ms. Bitch.

That one was great on so many levels! Mostly built around the fact that Japanese people don't train linguistically to distinguish a "v" sound from a "b" sound as Germanic people do!

The kids, after all, have Japanese names and the story happens in Japan.

regardless of what replaces AC....does anyone think we really need that last hour of toonami?

it's reruns and reruns of shows we just finished watching on the block....a user on twitter noted how that hour is basically dead weight at this point

Interesting you mention that, because not only do I not mind the reruns at the back, I think sometimes we could use more of them. If you look at the recent-ish Toonami originals, Blade Runner: Black Lotus never got a rerun (though it did get numerous marathons, which is more than you can say for a lot of shows), and neither did FLCL Alternative. The HD tapes of Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex only got one run, which is odd given that it was an [asa] warhorse for years, and one episode (S1E6) hasn't aired in HD due to a screw-up with the tapes that one time. Even IGPX could use another go, though I don't know what the situation is with those broadcast tapes. Didn't we want Discotek to make the block some new ones?

Anime fans like wrestling. Simple as that.

Enough do that you see the overlap at conventions all the time (this from someone who prefers real fighting to scripted combat).  Of course, the streaming crunch has proven that you cannot make something everyone will like.  It’s just the nature of the beast.

The AEW joke is more elaborate, that the French Toonami channel does air AEW, so “AEWToonami” trends on Twitter on occasion.

I don’t mind the rerun hour at all it’s just extra meh whenever it’s filled with shows that recently finished airing. I realize that can be useful for people who missed the original airing but I sure have no incentive to watch that hour. I would much prefer they cycle library titles that haven’t been aired in a year or longer. If they did that then it could even be two hours but maybe that’s a bit much.

FLCL Alternative got a rerun it even stayed early in the block one week to buy time for Mob to join, then it moved toward the back. None of the FLCLs have aired since then though.

Jose gave them a version of IGPX that’s proper wide screen but it’s not HD. They haven’t aired that version yet.

I forgot about the flub ups with HD GITS, they should give that another full run.

I was relieved that Black Lotus wasn’t immediately rerunning but I do think it and Fena should get a second run this year.

They supposedly still can air Space Dandy so they definitely should do that. Space Dandy right before comedy resumes with Futurama, it would be perfect. Hell if it was for Space Dandy I would probably not lose my shit if AC was replaced by a rerun but it should not have to come to that.

Also regarding anime fans and wrestling, they ran an AEW ad during Toonami last night.

I don't think that the 'Puberty Alien : The Musical' series 1-3 will get shown until they are closer to having series 4 ready to go.

I'm in the Food Wars / Yashahime camp for most likely although I'm open to being surprised.

They have released a 'Housing Complex C' teaser though so...

Oof just hit one that was a struggle to get through: The Old Man's Kindergarten episode.

That was BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD. Too bad it's necessary because of the flower guy/Reaper.

You gotta admit at least that the kids did an incredible job remodeling the old man's school. Oh and it won't be the last you see of this other pink haired girl named Sakura.

Figured.

Some severe tonal whiplash though, like that's an episode the feels like it's a TV-Y after school special, and then the next few immediately swing hard in the opposite direction with Reaper/Prof. Bitch and Nagisa's abusive mom.

A variety of replies to various posts because I can't be assed to quote every single message.

  • The Discotek suggestions are welcome, but you'd have to go through the Japanese rights holders to get a broadcast license, since Discotek only ever bothers with the home video licenses. I imagine that was the beginning of us going through TMS to grab the new Lupin seasons. (Part of me's hoping they go through TMS to grab the broadcast rights for Dr. Stone season 3 when it drops, unless those are in TOHO's wheelhouse.)
  • I think it was episode 7 of season 1 of GITS:SAC that had the quality issue. "MEME" was perfectly fine, from what I recall.
  • I had another one for Blatch, but that was a different thread.
  • Nothing screams "BASED" louder than Assassination Classroom turning Nagisa's gender ambiguity into a Funny Aneurysm Moment, then continuing to crack jokes about it. Yusei Matsui gives no fucks.

It's possible they already had the contract for Food Wars Fifth Plate ironed out and the last time Ass Class took a break Food Wars returned but if it happens again it might be nothing more than a coincidence.

If YashaHime has some kind of stupid 6 months wait or something then that could explain why it didn't show up already.

Beyond those two honestly who the hell knows what they can get from Sentai, Viz, a Japanese company or even the CrunchyMationPlex conglomerate.

And if they can't get anything still, then it's Primal season 2 or bust this Summer.

If Genndy doesn’t object to it, it’s probably just Primal.  Uzumaki isn’t due till Halloween, and the new originals are just announced (plus there’s a more than zero chance the Rick and Morty anime just airs Sunday between Rick and Morty seasons proper to keep the Rick train going).  It’s telling they can’t even get sloppy seconds at this point that aren’t legacy airings.  For God’s sake, AMC has Sentai and with it, Redo of Healer, the definitive joke choice that would at least get the block attention.  When that’s locked down, what do we have?

AMC is a great-big head-scratcher in this picture. I have no idea what their deal is. They go and acquire Sentai but pretty much do nothing with them so far, unless it's packaging HiDIVE with AMC+. Then again, maybe this fall we end up seeing Highschool Of The Dead air 2 episodes back-to-back for 6 weeks after Fear The Walking Dead or something. That would at least make sense to me.

I wonder if the long-term plan is to use Sentai voices to voice that weird hour-long animated drama Pantheon they were talking about? But if that show still even exists, I'll believe it when I see it.

Sentai won’t even dub Redo of Healer

They teased the possibility of doing one, so I wouldn't say "won't", but considering the subject matter, I'm guessing none of their usual people wanted anything to do with dubbing it.

Besides, it's the one anime in Sentai/Maiden Japan's catalog to have broken their age rating system by getting an 18+ instead of a TV-MA on the home video release, no way it's airing on TV, subbed or dubbed, even as a goof.

At this point, I'm kinda thinking they just might double Primal at Midnight for a couple weeks, air Episode 10 at 11:30 PM on July 2nd, then rerun the marathon from Thanksgiving 2020 (with updated bumpers but same vocal track) from 12-5 AM.

If we have to wait until July 9th to get any new content in the Midnight Hour once Ass Class takes its final bow, then so be it.

They could certainly do worse than an extra episode of Primal for two weeks. Having a full marathon of Primal right after finishing weekly airings would be excessive.

Why does anybody want that sick and demented show on Toonami, or to watch it at all?  Also if they air it, Demarco will get more and more of a reputation of repeatedly airing shows with rape in it.
