I strongly suspect that the reason holidays are still so popular today is because capitalism wills it so and that you're taught that you're a horrible person if you don't buy into them.

Yes, modern holidays are split between commercialized ones to boost consumer spending and staggered ones to give workers strategically-timed days off.

And the ones that do neither fall to the wayside.

Pretty much this. I don't decorate for Christmas and people look at me like I have three heads when I tell them why I don't have a Christmas tree in the living room.
