garbagepailcat
Husboy and I are watching his (our?) two nephews tomorrow. I’ve never been around kids very much, so I don’t really know what to expect. I never stayed with my aunts and uncles when I was growing up unless I was staying with a cousin. I never really got birthday gifts or anything from them. Like, I knew they were family and that they loved me, but I didn’t expect shit from them, even the one that was my neighbor for most of my childhood. Husboy’s family makes it a point to all spend time together and take the kids for bonding activities and shit, so it’s that time. It’s all weird to me. They’re like 7 and 10 and idk what the fuck to do with them. Were you close with your aunts and uncles? Are you close with nieces and nephews? How do I entertain these babies? Doom Metal Alchemist
My mom's family was apparently very close knit, as I spent a LOT of time with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins as a kid (eventually, we moved away from them all, however one branch of the extended family, my mom's twin sister and her husband, and until they grew up, their two kids, still visit us every summer). I'm pretty sure my brother and my one cousin were each other's best friends until we moved away. A couple of those aunt / uncle pairs have vacation homes in the mountains, and even in my 20s it was a regular occurrence for them to invite us to stay there with them for vacation. My dad's family, on the other hand... I spent a lot of time with the grandparents, and virtually no time (or at most, very little time) with everyone else. Although as an adult and one of my half brothers got married and had kids, all of a sudden his mom and step dad became a part of my life, which was brand new at the time. I spent a fair amount of time with my half-brother's kids, but I don't relate to kids very well. I wasn't the one that entertained them, my parents were, and I live here also, and often when they went to McDonald's, they'd invite me along (I was pretty much a shut-in for a while). I have a couple cousins that are so much younger than me, they may as well be my nephews. We've bonded over video games. It seems my aunt and uncle took a while getting them new video game consoles, so when they were really young, they played my uncle's old Super Nintendo, and that's right up my alley.

This is very important. Hide all your drugs very well. Preferably in a safe. Little bastards get into everything. Second, light your stuff on fire and tell the seven year old, "there , beat ya to it. Now what are you gonna do? Nothin', that's what" Give the ten year old an ipad, it'll leave you alone. oh, right, don't burn all the ipads. Forgot to mention that >.>
bnmjy
I watch my nephew quite often. We just play games, go watch a movie, eat out. Shit like that. It's pretty fun. 1
garbagepailcat
I think we’re going to hook up the projector on the screen porch, let them pick a movie to watch, and order a pizza.

Honestly if I were a kid that would sound pretty cool. How long are you watching them? Once movie ends are you gonna be like "ok we still have an hour and I just remembered that I don't know kids so now what?"
wacky1980
pizza/movie projector is always a hit. add popcorn/soda and an inflatable mattress/tent and maybe some youtube on a tablet for after the movie, and you're all set. they require occasional pee breaks and a change into pajamas at about dark. and then maybe some mini donuts and oj in the morning. you'll be the favorite aunt/uncle destination in no time.
André Toulon
Like other's have asked, how long will you have them. If it's just a few hours.... I wouldn't worry too much about it....They are old enough they should be out of the "I want my mommy/daddy" stage, so I know you have the projector.....And if you have even the shittiest of game consoles, that'll buy you some time. You seem to live in an area surrounded by woods, so if you are even the slightest bit outdoorsy, take em outside....That'll wear them out. This world has really taking the value out of kids going out doors....The come in smelly, but after they bathe and eat, it's a wrap.

garbagepailcat
we’ll have them from tomorrow evening until Saturday evening, I reckon. Thanks for all the ideas! I need to get some sodas for them. Something without caffeine. 😅 we have lots of games and stuff, including that new Mario maker game, so that should eat up a lot of this. Have you checked with their parents that they are ok with you giving them soda? Soda is not looked at today like it was when you and I were kids, lol. wacky1980
root beer is caffeine free. the sugar will wear off after about an hour. so let them share a can about an hour before bed, and they'll crash out like clockwork.

It depends on the Root Beer. A&W and Dad's are caffeine free, I think Mug is caffeine free (I am not sure), but Barq's has some caffeine (less than most caffeinated sodas, though). Most lemon-lime sodas like 7-Up, Sierra Mist, and Sprite are caffeine free too. Mountain Dew Ice, despite being a lemon-lime soda, is still Mountain Dew at heart and is loaded with caffeine. Squirt, which is a lemon-lime soda, is caffeine free, but Squirt Ruby Red (grapefruit flavor added) has about as much caffeine as Barq's root beer. I’m not entirely opposed to it. They’re both sweet kids as far as kids go. I just don’t really know how to interact with them. I’m like a person petting a dog for the first time.
