that is why i said i didn't see anything on enki.

IF this had been an actual emergency, i would have gotten a proper notification.

screw local new weather. screw weather channel.

and damnit..i want a barometer.

Fine. Get a barometer. And you can measure the barometric pressure every time a cloud comes up. Because these dumb fucks at the weather station can't get shit right.

Weather outlets giving out bad info almost let to me getting caught on the gulf coast in Katrina.....I literally was going to stay in my apartment 3 blocks off the shoreline because I had ran from so many drizzles that were supposed to be monster storms.  It was sheer luck that my mother finally convinced me to come stay at my uncle's further inland.

1/2 inch of rain. That's it. Didn't even lose power.

Fuck the weather people.

Yeah it was kinda bs...we were at what? A torcon 3? They kept talking about hail and they closed school early and we just got rain...at 3am....that’s it

Yep. We had all the warnings in place here, and got half an inch of rain. Never lost power. Lights never even flickered. The sun was out yesterday morning, then around noon, we got some rain. Then around 4, the sun was back out again.

and that's the thing.

these outlets deliver nothing but drama.

hell...the weather channel has it's own 'soap opera' line up.

it's not even news anymore. just shows.

and the reporting.

weather person ~ there's a possible chance it might hail maybe if the conditions are right, probably.

i think creating drama is definitely the worst part of weather forecasting. it's literally the least entertaining tv to watch, as long as there's nothing dangerous coming. so if they create the impression that there's even the slightest chance of dangerous weather, they have a bankable item.

there's also the liability aspect. if they don't tell you what the worst case scenario looks like, and then the worst case scenario occurs, they've been negligent to the point of causing / contributing to innocent deaths. unfortunately it's a lesser-of-two-evils situation. either piss people off by being unnecessarily cautious, or leave people under-informed to the point that they don't take a weather event seriously, with the result of injury or death.

this is mostly why i don't pay attention to consumer-facing weather media. i follow a small number of weather people who are consistently on-mark and respected by the community at large. i'm also a butterfly effect away from having entered a meteorology / atmospheric science program in college. in retrospect, i kinda wish that would have happened. i also like to use the nws website. it provides a baseline forecast model and a pretty strong radar product (the images from above, for starters). it also includes local forecast discussions created by the people directly responsible for issuing weather statements that local stations base their reporting on. it also has access to some pretty awesome raw tools. my personal favorite is the GOES-east and GOES-west full-disk image set, which supplies near-live, satellite-based imagery to every weather station in the western hemisphere.

I’m more or less ok with it...I don’t do well in bad weather
