Common core is easy af because it's closer to the way the human brain actually thinks about numbers.

5,327+860=6,187 because... well, we added every single 1 together and thats what came out.

Vs.

5,300+850+30-3+10

Got a chunk of about 5300, got a chunk of about 850. Stick the chunks together. Ok, now we've got a chunk of about 30, and a chunk of 10. Stick them all in the mix. All right, so getting more specific, that chunk of about 30 was three short, so lets take that away. Wham, answer right there.

Well because when everybody started shouting about how common core was a socialist conspiracy created by the Obama administration, i actually looked at what it entailed, read studies on how and why it worked, and began integrating it into every day life.

As someone who failed algebra 3 times, the fact that i can now do things almost instantly in my head that would have taken a few minutes to write out with the old style mathematics, well i really wish i had this back then.

I've been doing common core math in my head and i didn't even know it. You're right, that is closer to how the brain actually works. I just did it that way because it was easier.

Thanks for pointing this out. Common core is basically how I've been doing math in my head all along. It's much more intuitive when you actually take the time to look at it.

I came to this thread to troll.... and I was enlightened instead.  Nicely done, Sponges.

People are bad at math because of how they are taught it.....It's taught in terrible pieces when basic math can be taught in a much larger an simpler blanket.

Once my kids knew how to add the first 10 numbers, I taught them how to multiply.....Adding large numbers 1 by 1 is stupid.  And I start with 9.
