I am notoriously bad at landscapes.

Oh ok. To me people are super hard, way harder than landscapes, practically impossible for me to draw and you do them beautifully so I assumed a landscape would be np. It didnt occur to me that you could be bad at them while being able to handle people.

People are very difficult. The main reason I am woefully atrocious with landscapes is because I never really worked on them.

It took me a long time to actually get people down in any capacity. At first I did stick figures and would do stick figure wars on notebook paper. Then I started drawing some really shitty anime characters or outright copying existing ones. That's still pretty common for people, actually. It wasn't until high school that I made a serious effort to work on realistic people. In elementary school and junior high I would attempt realistic people only to have them coming out look ridiculous and having elongated faces, huge noses, weird eyes, etc. In high school I started drawing people that looked like people, but not like the people I was drawing. I spent an entire summer, day and night, drawing people. Mountains of crumpled up paper adorning my floor as I desperately tried to get better as quickly as I could. It sort of worked. By the end of high school I was drawing people that looked like the person I had set out to draw. As I went into college and beyond I stuck with it and found myself with a seemingly insurmountable hurdle to overcome. See, I'm colorblind, and painting the traditional way wasn't working, unless I did solid colors with no shading. So I devised a way to mathematically determine color values, and, using the eyedropper tool in Photoshop, created a swath of colors I still use to this day. I may not be able to see what I'm painting, but according to my numbers the colors are correct. It took years to get that down, though.

Anyways, have a makeshift timeline!

I did that in high school as part of a mural on the school halls. Unfortunately it has been painted over.

My nephew and sister attend that same school atm which is why I even heard about it. Weird to have us do a giant mural only to have it covered up within a couple years.

lol I guess we'll just have to wait and see. And actually I have started drawing again. Going to make my own graphic novel which will hopefully be available in the coming months.

@GunStarHero

this is how my youngest is starting (with anime characters)

her thing now is wolves and foxes.

but, she is getting very talented with each piece.

you are quite talented.

i started each of my girls off with some basic skills (shading, shapes, perspective)

and they just moved on from that. *except my middle~she has my love of culinary in her bones*

tl:dr you are quite talented.

do you have a sketch pad? and some good pencils?

this might be the chance to delve into the world of sketching/doodling/drawing?

Thank you! And if I may give a bit of advice on drawing people to pass on your girls...

Have them practice drawing still lives and pictures of people upside down. Helps single things out and makes your mind start working in a more constructive way.

i do. i let them go with their flow. but also had (ve) them practice hand. still life. etc.

i have yet to get this girl a 'model' for her to use. but she enjoys it very much.

and happily enough, she will practice on a certain area, until she moves on.

(eyes, ears, hands, etc)
