The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board

New week, new ratings:

Final Cable 2018 May 12.SAT

Guess we'll just have to get used to only 3 shows being listed until new FLCL next month. I'll be shocked if MHA went up from Kai. Hope it retained well.

Toonami owned the night in the young male demographic on Cable TV, which is what usually happens whenever there's not a major sporting event on Cable. However, numbers were actually DOWN on a week-to-week basis.

Cool. It's "later". Unfortunately, these ratings SUCK:

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-5-12-2018.html

DRAGON BALL at 0.45/0.34 compared to last week’s 0.47/0.38, MY HERO ACADEMIA down 0.08 to 0.27/578K, FOOLY COOLY down 0.05 to 0.24/501K, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE down 0.01 to 0.24, HUNER X HUNTER down 0.01 to 0.21/450K, BLACK CLOVER steady at 0.19, NARUTO steady at 0.18/377K, SPACE DANDY down 0.01 to 0.14/305K, COWBOY BEBOP down 0.03 to 0.1/316K, and GHOST IN THE SHELL down 0.01 to 0.13/287K.

Yep, MHA Episode 2 jinx hit, as it dropped all the way to 578K! It looks like this show may not live up to the hype after all, but it's still early. Plus, it IS hamstrung since it's not a dub premiere, and its contemporary One-Punch Man was.

And we STILL don't know how Black Clover did, but I actually believe it may be over 400K...

I really hope new FLCL will give a boost, but it may not, especially if Toonami is dumb enough to try a same-night encore at 3:30 AM. I guess we'll see...

You either show anime the day it comes out or you're late.

This is what you're dealing with. People saw MHA on the web when it was hype a year ago. TV blocks of acquired shit on even the slightest delay is as outdated as record of the month clubs.

However, like record of the month clubs (Vinyl Me Please is a cool service), shit like this is still cool to have around, even if no one's watching.

This will be a trend unfortunately even as people become less adverse to subs. Toonami will still have its place as a showcase for good shows to screen for the general public for awhile though

I’m hoping too. It would be a shame if it’s capped out because of what comes before it

This is the typical dialogue for when there's a down week, and it's lacking substance. The ratings are bad! Except when they aren't! Maybe... for what it's worth, everything after FLCL was stable despite the lower numbers. That's all I need to see to chalk this night up to not being a failure.

At this point, what would it even take for a night of Toonami to lose money? Dragon Ball Super under 800K? My Hero Academia not even getting a half-million, and everything else being a hundred thousand lower than usual? -_-

I should subscribe to CJ Maffris of the Toonami Faithful site's outlook: never look at ratings.

We probably all should at this point. I get the strong impression they really don't matter much at all anymore.

Well we've been over this a few times in the ol ratings thread... but Toonami ratings don't matter due to Cartoon Network having incredibly low ratings overall.

Toonami will continue existing with ratings this low, yes.

But still it's disappointing after 88 percent retention for MHA last week to see it back down to what every other show does after Kai. Kai only retaining 78 percent followed by MHA doing 78 percent is pretty bad.

Obviously we hoped it would do better.

It's got a lot working against it though. Worst spot on the schedule, almost no advertising, and it's 2 years old. I've already seen it subbed and dubbed, so this is going to be my third watch.

With simuldubs now a thing this is going to become more and more common, particularly as big streaming services invest in the medium.

I wonder how many views MHA is pulling down on Hulu.  That would give us a far more accurate picture.

Very much yes. Talk about the actual shows, and not the ratings. All of this endless fearmongering, theorizing, and speculating is a cancer upon these forums.

Personally, CJ works at a news broadcasting station, so he has to deal with co-workers talking about nothing BUT ratings all day!

So there you have it. 500K watching JoJo being great at 12:30 is all about shifting priorities...

FYI one reply tweet on that tweet says this address was made like 3 months ago, which makes me feel a tad better that they are aware of what is most important.

Then maybe this thread should be locked.

Or maybe.... it should stay open!

And then people that don't like talking about ratings don't come in the ratings thread and complain that people are talking about ratings.

It seems crazy but I think that could work out for everyone.

Megalo Box pwns everything, as it rightfully should. I am 200% ready for this show to get dubbed and air on Toonami.

Yes but that brings us to Toonami's main problem, the inability to get the current hits until years later.

I actually think the bigger issue this time is with Crunchyroll. Everything they license by themselves seems to come out at least a year later than if Funi gets it, then punts the subbed simulcast rights over to them. Kantai Collection first premiered in the Winter 2015 season, then didn't come out on Blu-ray for two-and-a-half years. Re:Zero has taken a similar path. And then you've got poor KonoSuba!, which hasn't even been licensed yet after more than two years since it premiered.

It would tremendously suck if this means Megalo Box won't get dubbed until 2020. At some point, Funi should do something to get all of these backlogged shows from CR out of the way.

Yes but I think this is where Toonami needs to find a beneficial relationship. Funimation has Crunchyroll and VRV. Toonami should cuddle up to someone, maybe Sentai or Aniplex? Work out a deal, even if it's just a deal to show their old hits at low/no cost.

I think Crunchy has Mob Psycho and Made in Abyss as well. They've got some good stuff.

Well you know Funimation and Crunchyroll are in bed together.  It makes sense that once a Crunchyroll anime is uploaded, the distribution rights COULD be done under Funimation a year later.  Anime that Funimation licenses by themselves go out way sooner than this.

Dragon Ball Super re-enters the Top 25 in Live+3 18-49 for May 7-13:

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/dvr-ratings/cable-live-3-ratings-for-may-7-13-2018/

That would be Episode 63, the one that aired on May 12th. It is currently unknown how well the episode that aired on May 5th did in Live+3.

But as for May 19th, in Live+SD...

Final Cable 2018 May 19.SAT

DBS dropped BIG time in total viewers and adults 18-34, but somehow held steady in 18-49, as did all 3 shows that are currently considered cable originals. JoJo's time is wrong; it aired at 12:45 AM. And Kai did rise 0.03 in adults 18-34.

But the big story just has to be NBA playoffs effectively skewing the color scheme on everything. Even so, looks like Super came in 4th, Kai 6th, and JoJo tied for 7th in 18-34 among cable originals, meaning that they all take on a green tinge.

DB Super didn't even get 900K. GEEEEZ.  Is this a sign of the continuing decline in cable usage?

Ratings r bad for me I know but it's like Pop Tarts. After some point you get into a different mood and think "eh I could go for some Pop Tarts!"

It doesn't look like the Royal Wedding affected Toonami much at all, since the ratings for the evening CNN slots dropped off quickly, but the NBA Playoff game definitely did. Even so, it seems the Toonami shows on the chart stood up to it admirably in adults 18-34.

Considering Robot Chicken's latest premiere only got about 1 million viewers when that show used to easily score twice that much, I'd say the decline is getting even worse.

Well, now you know why Turner hates these blasted Nielsen ratings, and why they think these should be abolished. It's a bit like trying to get rid of the Electoral College, except this time, the object of your hatred isn't directly screwing you over.

Wow, despite the weak start, the rest of the block actually showed pretty good resilience! At least it stayed out of the 300Ks and over 0.15 18-49!

http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-5-19-2018.html

The Adult Swim line-up performed as follows:  DRAGON BALL at the same 0.45/0.34 as last week, MY HERO ACADEMIA down 0.01 to 0.26/554K, FOOLY COOLY steady at 0.24/485K, JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE steady at 0.24, HUNTER X HUNTER up 0.03 to 0.24/480K, BLACK CLOVER up 0.03 to 0.22/440K, NARUTO up 0.03 to 0.21/415K, SPACE DANDY up 0.05 to 0.19/361K, COWBOY BEBOP up 0.04 to 0.17/333K, and GHOST IN THE SHELL up 0.03 to 0.16/327K.

Keep in mind the average below is calculated differently. Most shows are multiplied by "2", and FLCL is divided by "3", and then the sum is divided by the number of 15 minute timeslots in the block (23). The results are thus:

5/19/18 - Total Viewers
Show Viewers Retention
Family Guy
DBS 876,000 #DIV/0!
DBZKFC 686,000 78.31%
MHA 554,000 80.76%
FLCL 485,000 87.55%
JoJo 482,000 99.38%
HxH 480,000 99.59%
B. Clover 440,000 91.67%
Shippuden 415,000 94.32%
Dandy 361,000 86.99%
Bebop 333,000 92.24%
GITS 327,000 98.20%
