Yes .... but......

50 percent of TV viewers didn't cut their cords in the last year.

I'm not saying the ratings haven't suffered, I'm simply saiyan that getting 1.5 mil might be a bridge too far. It might be closer to a mil in terms of ceiling.

AS as a whole is losing viewers outside of Rick and Morty. They've used Family Guy as a crutch for years and even that isn't a sure thing anymore . That also sort of limits what Toonami can do.

Yes, but while AS and Cartoon Network are losing viewers, the issue is Toonami is losing even more. So you can't just blame cord cutting or weak lead ins for losing almost half your viewers in a year.

Toonami is airing their anime alongside reruns.

This is what Netflix is airing their anime alongside:

Point to Netflix.

I agree with you 100%. I was just thinking it was a contributing factor. The lineup itself isn't bringing the viewers as well.

Maybe you should try comparing it to other anime as opposed to everything, because of course Netflix is gonna have it beat every time.

That's my point.  Netflix can air their anime next to stuff like The Punisher to raise its profile in a way Toonami simply can't.

Posted

Yeah, but Toonami doesn't air live action. Hell, since season 5 of Jack finished, they barely air Western stuff anymore. So while you're right in that the Punisher being on Netflix with a bunch of anime has Toonami beat out in appeal, it's still an unfair comparison compared to using Kuromukuro as an example instead.

That's true, but Toonami CAN and has featured theatrical movie trailers in a similar fashion.

So, last Saturday night we had a perfect night in trending, but would that translate to higher ratings? The answer is: yes, and no.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders hits a new high in everything but 18-34 and Lupin the 3rd hits a new low in 18-34. In fact, no "cable premiere" show in the SBD era (since 4/11/15) has posted a 0.25 or lower in 18-34--until today. Lupin finally has achieved that ignoble honor! While I really want Toonami to keep going with Lupin the 3rd and pick up the French Adventure (Part 5) when it's available (hell, maybe even boost it to a World Premiere this time), some measure of trepidation must be felt over Lupin the 3rd Part 4's low ratings. Gundam Unicorn bottomed out at a 0.27 18-34; hopefully this will be Lupin the 3rd's floor in Adult Swim's classic target demographic!

Hopefully Gundam IBO can help out the situation with its return and give Hunter x Hunter and Lupin a boost (not to mention JoJo before it), but I guess we'll know in 2 weeks!

Not too bad this week

As for Lupin, I don't think they were expecting it to be great due to its original 2:00 AM timeslot. The staff just really loves the show just like they love Gundam. They may have gotten a really good deal on it as well just so it can get some TV exposure before its Disc release next year. I wouldn't count out Part 5 either! The block is having a hard time securing the rights to a lot of shows due to streaming competituion and Lupin may be one of the things that they can still get without too much of a problem!

Shippuden probably did a little better than Lupin, which will make it the 25th time it has beaten the show before it (I know this because a buddy of mine on Reddit likes to keep track of this and celebrate it every week in their ratings thread!  >:D )

Who was looking forward to Tokyo Ghoul, again? It was too Bleach-head to be edgelord and too edgelord to be Bleach-head!

(that said, I am re-watching Root A this week in anticipation of the finale this weekend, but I digress...)

But at least you know what you're getting with Gundam IBO!

Then again, AOT S2 didn't change anything, sooo...

It'll probably just have a normal drop from Jojo. It could gain on it a little considering they've actually gone and promotd it more than a week out this time!

Yeah. If there's anyone one show that should be considered spoiling the sheets, it's the one with the gentleman thief. But it's down low enough that there isn't much they can do other than not air more of it.

89 percent retention for Jojo? Way better than normal. That monkey lusting after an underage girl must have created word of mouth.

So instead of Lupin taking a huge drop it was the show right before it this time.

AoT reruns beating both Bebop and Outlaw with a worse timeslot.

That's some surprisingly good retention across the board. And the back end continues to gain between the shows, even if it's not a whole lot. I'm satisfied.

Nothing really of note, except Bebop keeps doing better every week, and Lupin is stuck until 200K 18-34, probably for good now. Super's average just keeps getting lower and lower, and I'd say it's quite possible no show's average will be in the millions by end of year (except Samurai Jack, of course, which is done.)

That's actually pretty huge for Lupin. Its highest 18-34 so far was 0.35, which means this is the 2nd highest! Still, nothing above 300K 18-34 or 500K 18-49 is pretty frustrating.

That's what irritates me about the current state of the block. We are missing out on new things. We already missed the boat on MHA and will probably also do so for Black Clover because the block has no room until January unless they expand again. Meanwhile Funimation won't wait and they'll put it up on their service which means even if Toonami gets it it won't be a dub premiere

Posted

Could you imagine DBS, Black Clover and FLCL 2&3? Even if DBS is a rerun, that line up to start a block would be tremendous.

Instead we get Rape Ape and the stained sheets stopping everything dead in its tracks.

smh

Posted

I’m now convinced the President in last weeks Rick and Morty was supposed to be DeMarco, pissed Rick and Morty run the block.

Black Clover would probably rate well, but I have no desire to see it on the block. I guess it's the most generic shonen to ever get this popular. shithead

It’s all relative to how Family Guy does (which doesn’t rise high due to a weaker prime time ). We’ll see when PI comes out later tonight.

TOONAMI ADULTS 18-49 AVERAGE - 0.27

Downside: Kai started the block off weak. What happened to the 800K and 900K???

Upside: This is probably the steadiest retention rate I ever seen on this block in weeks!

It’s all relative to how Family Guy does (which doesn’t rise high due to a weaker prime time ). We’ll see when PI comes out later tonight.

And sure enough Family Guy pulled in only 1.1 million viewers. Saturday is just weak overall and Toonami is paying the price.

Ratings are an issue, but I’m more concerned about Demarcos Ask.fm statement that acquiring shows for the block is getting harder and harder. That’s what’s going to do Toonami in, a lack of content

Now would be as good a time as any to go back to airing obscure stuff that deserves a wider audience. Say what you will about their quality, but the "unpredictables", as I like to call them, were never boring when revealed.

That is probably due to streaming rights.

Toonami should go after just broadcast rights, which are much easier to get. Netflix doesn't give a damn about broadcast rights.

Damn, so only Super is going to be above 800k? That's hilariously bad.

Remember the good ol days of like... a year ago... when One Piece was getting 800k? Lolz.
