  1. Why do that when you can just have Russia move to you?
  2. That doesn't really matter. Sampling is a form of appreciation in that context, especially since it boosted some lesser know tunes from the golden age or rock and roll, doo wop, and, Motown. It was also at least partially a response to the coopting of their music - stripping away a lot of the commercial pop overtones that made the music radio friendly to white ears for the culturally authentic rhythm "heartbeat." In that respect, what Weird Al did was mocking that deeply personal root, if unintentionally.
  3. I saw your FB post. What happened?
  4. Dude, @tsar4. It's called sampling, not "ripping off". The Hip Hop movement was based on local DJs ripping and remixing popular R&B music, often from the Motown era, into new rhythms. It was a spiritual "sibling" to the new wave movement: both sought to distill popular music to its most functional elements.
  5. Oh, I know what you mean. Considering (1) most of the people who are capable and willing to fight the Russians have either evacuated or are linked up with the Ukrainian military in some capacity (2) most of the people who are pro Russian are either associated with or participating with local militias, and (3) the rest are likely underground or not in a position to fight (such as elderly) - there isn't a whole lot of people to conscript. The recent reports of possibly importation of "voters" from Crimea is anecdotal at best but nonetheless indicates that there aren't a large number of people to fill he conscription rolls. Furthermore, they don't even have enough weapons to arm their professional soldiers effectively. Compared to their elite soldiers, whomever they get from the occupied regions would fairly low risk.
  6. Where did you see that?
  7. So it was a good birthday.
  8. Well, I mean it is hard to find good drugs nowadays.
  9. Yeah, the death by excess is a thing.
  10. It's a good thing Uncle Joe Biden cares about you @Ginguy See?
  11. It hasn't been confirmed Savannah was killed by police or her own father. Regardless, the fact they even engaged in a shootout knowing a hostage might be with the suspect is horrifying.
  12. It's a part of life in Florida, so chances are good that a lot of retirees have insurance. What's always a concern are the silent majority of wage slaves and indigent who will be disproportionately impacted.
  13. Exactly. Ghoulish as it is, they're most likely assuming whoever doesn't want to be in Russia has already evacuated, and the people left are either willing to go to battle or (more likely) easily cowed. The fact that it's been reported that "voters" were possibly bussed in from Crimea, it seems likely that there won't be all that many people left to actually conscript.
  14. I suspect the Russians see all of the people in the occupied regions as cannon fodder if they’re not already part of a resistance militia.
  15. Happy Birthday, dude.
  16. I think the word you're looking for is "actually" since legitimate is rather antithetical to your point.
  17. Fortunately for us, Trump is a generational talent in all the worst arts. Unfortunately for us, ridding ourselves of Trump and MAGA merely assuages the very worst tendencies of our base nature. It does nothing to deal with the real problem of conservatism: too many people still buy into the concept of Randian Objectivism, and all of the horror that entails when mixed with closet greed and intolerance.
  18. Murdoch doesn't give a shit about anyone but himself. The point is that he knows that the MAGA movement is a dead end: as soon as Trump is in jail or mysteriously floating face down in the Mar-A-Lago pool, the movement is done. Until then, his instincts tell him to hedge his bets, both by keeping the MAGAtards happy with Scumbag Carlson and playing up to the rest of the closet conservatives with "moderate" voices. You can't act like MAGA is an perpetual movement - it has no substance of its own outside of the Trump Cult of Personality. He's the only one that can hold together an assortment of white nationalists, evangelicals, conspiracy theorists, etc. DeSantis, inept buffoon that he is, doesn't have the same charisma that makes Trump so unifying and dangerous.
  19. Pat merged it so its all cool.
  20. Seems like something this important could have another thread on a different board, too.
  21. Might be a bit of an overstatement, but still an unsavory character and likely a thug.
  22. That so? https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/07/25/rupert-murdoch-donald-trump-splitsville-00047748 There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that Fox News is less interested in sucking up MAGA and more interested in playing off it to maintain its place at the top of the conservative news world. Someone like Cheney fits perfectly into it because she can be held up as an example of the "virtuous" conservative all while adhering to the fundamentals of the conservative platform. Yes, populism certainly translates to wins for primaries; it also has translated into a historic slate of bad candidates. That should be fair indication that MAGA isn't the dominant voice of the GOP, just as it isn't an analog for the conservative platform, which hasn't actually changed.
  23. Why would she need Dem money to do that? Fox News can pay her a lot more to do that every night.
