2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences
Raptorpat replied to NewBluntsworth's topic in Current Events
To the extent that the narrative for weeks has been about his age/competency, I think he allayed concerns that he's a senile, walking corpse. Age will obviously remain an issue, but I think less so if this is the version of him that is put out there over the next several months. He spent a lot of time "reminding" moderates/independents about the contrast between him and his "predecessor", as well as congressional obstruction/hypocrisy. I think that's the campaign framing that he really wants to have and we'll probably start seeing his campaign ramp up on hitting those points. I think in the general sense it was mostly a positive moment for him, but it's likely true that most people who watch the SotU are already engaged and decided. So the real target audience will maybe absorb sound bites and headlines as it filters through the media this week, and it'll take time to see if there's any impact on his numbers if at all. -
Into the Never-ending "George Santos" Rabbithole

Federal representatives do not have to live in the district, though they mostly do due to the politics. At least in NY, statehouse members must live in their district. The exception of incumbents that got booted out of their district in redistricting. They get the one cycle to move back into the district. -

Since the update, the birthdays are defaulted to GMT which is the default/neutral world timezone. 7pm EST is midnight GMT and when the birthdays flip over. Not sure why and couldn't figure out how to fix it at the time. -

2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences

This is a better description of the technical aspect. The court was unanimous on the practical outcome today, but the majority went a step farther to severely limit even Congress' ability to disqualify candidates. -

SCOTUS unanimously holds that states don't have the authority to disqualify federal candidates through the 14th amendment. https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2024-03-04/supreme-court-rules-trump-stays-on-the-ballot-despite-jan-6-mob-attack-on-the-capitol -

I stopped going to Wendy's as an early teen when I brought a burger back to the counter because they gave me cheese when I asked for no cheese, and after bitching at me they gave me a new burger that was clearly the same burger with the cheese scraped off via fingernails.

Arizona Prosecutor Refuses to Extradite Accused Murderer
Raptorpat replied to 1pooh4u's topic in Current Events
From my limited perspective, AZ has been trending blue - on a statewide level. Maricopa County represents like 60+% of the vote, so it decides statewide elections. Like all urban-suburban counties, it's been trending left. But I think more importantly, I think in AZ's case's it has trended left faster over the past eight years because of this: "suburban voters hate weird shit" AZ's state GOP party in particular is notable for how it's been taken over by the "extremely weird shit" wing. As long as the state GOP is completely engulfed in weird shit and statewide Dem candidates remain moderate and inoffensive, the Dems will probably retain the edge in those races.
