There’s only so much even the greatest auteurs can do when the only animation being made in-house these days are video game adaptations desperately pretending to be Japanese but failing because the boobs are all too small, or vehicles for comedians who don’t want to do stand up comedy tours. And make no mistake, Genndy is one of the last great auteurs from that era that is still active and hasn’t been disgraced.
Even American comics are begging people to have Japanese studios animate them. Over the past few months, there’s been rumors Robert Kirkman’s (Invincible, Walking Dead) next big project will be an adaptation of his Energon Universe comics.
And everyone has made it clear they want Studio Trigger to animate it, not the people who are doing Invincible. To me that’s telling that everyone thinks Western studios suck that much ass (and Trigger has repeatedly asked to do a Transformers project) that people want them to do Transformers and G.I. Joe.
