  1. Toonami’s starting to feel like Soul Train in its dying days, except less dancing. What used to be THE premiere source for a certain type of material (music, anime) has found itself outmoded and beaten by more contemporary sources for the item in question while its attempts to right the ship are beaten three steps ahead of the game. You’ll know things have REALLY gone south if Toonami starts reminding you about the good old days before Netflix and Hulu like Soul Train did in its dying days.
  2. Well...they’re not wrong. Especially #1. Lost Paradise coming out this year soothed that wound at least.
  3. In 1997, when ADV employed non-union talent for a dub that was often held up as what was wrong with dubs? Let’s just say standards have come a long way in 20 years.
  4. https://apple.news/AE5MbB9V5QhKobCWAxYgduw Huh.
  5. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2018-12-05/original-eva-english-cast-petition-to-re-dub-series-for-netflix/.140411 The original cast of D listers is petitioning to be part of the redub. Personally I rather Netflix just hired people from their other shows, like one of the Stranger Things kids as Shinji.
  6. Now all I need is for Hulu to suggest SSSS Gridman after Mr. Robot or something. This is just another front in the content wars. Luckily Toonami has Crunchyroll in their corner.

    Bleach

The Bleach manga and anime was trash at the end and everyone kinda realizes it now, with Kubo more interested in subversion (some might just say trolling) than consistency. The thing is, the movie goes above and beyond with the chemistry thing because Orihime is little more than a glorified extra (although her and Chad will likely have more of a role in any sequel if Netflix green lights it), superfluous characters like Kon and Don Kanoji (sp?) are cut entirely, and the emotional core of the movie is not Ichigo as a soul reaper in and of himself, but his relationship to Rukia and the responsibility she leads him into, along with their growing friendship. If a sequel is made, expect Kubo to go “No no no no no. No. That was not my artistic intention and we are going to stick with what the manga did because I wrote it and it is therefore irrefutable”. And a new generation of viewers, many of which would never have given Bleach the time of day if it wasn’t on their Netflix dash, get to be introduced to the joys of Troll Kubo.
  9. SSSS Gridman 9.
  10. That's...actually a really good point. I kinda wonder if this is going to lead to Rebuild getting a redub as well. I imagine yes if they get a celebrity cast, no if it's just regular VA's.

    Bleach

Yeah, in that shounen BFF kinda way where there is an out for something more overt. If they make a sequel and decide to go that way, it will make less than zero sense, and probably can only be justified by "Kubo told us to do it."

    Bleach

Ichigo and Rukia. Pretty much every review points out their chemistry and several lines were changed to be more overtly romantic.
  13. Time to reflect does that, thankfully. That and I do genuinely believe the current On Demand culture makes getting mad at a show dumb when there’s literally five or six other ones available.

    Bleach

I won’t lie, while I could care less about the anime getting a conclsuon since I know it’ll be junk, I genuinely want to see the LA film get a proper sequel. Mostly because it was clear that in simplyfying the story to such a degree (making it much smoother and less bloated) and getting rid of all the filler, they had the inadvertent effect of making the the film the beginning of a love story. A love story that doesn’t occur in the manga. Part of me wants to see if that leaner, faster Bleach creates a more satisfying conclusion than the manga, or if Kubo gonna Kubo and the end result is the same sloppy mess.

    Bleach

Can we all agree a 3 minute training montage is infinitely preferable to 3 filler episodes?
  16. I think on this board Elfie and myself are the only ones watching SSSS Gridman, but that’s the most fun I’m having this season. Well that and Zombieland Saga, which won me over something fierce.
  17. Deku has just the one. Two depending on certain filler.
  18. Even given DeMarco’s boner for the guy, you could do WAY WORSE than Watanabe.
  19. So this is what, an anime version of The Revenant? Actually, don’t answer that. I have negative interest in seeing it. Ever.
  20. There’s a reason I think he wants to dub the new Super Robot Wars. Apparently the animation is from the people doing the Netflix Ultraman.
  21. It’s one of those shows that if you aren’t directly in front of it, you have no real feelings on it. Not to mention this was what, 2009, 2011? This was before pretty much EVERYTHING was On Demand. I mean these days, Kekkaishi on say, Hulu, is something you scroll past to watch Goblin Slayer, not a good chunk of the only anime premiering on US TV that week not selling children’s card games. Come to think of it, the reaction to Kekkaishi in a pre and post On Demand world is a rather fascinating microcosm of what choice does for the consumer and how it lets people ignore shows they otherwise would have to acknowledge.
