Not really. I almost never let it get to the point where the light comes on. When i fill my tank, I generally end up adding anywhere from around 5-9 gallons into my tank. Not purposely getting any of those numbers, it just stops and when I look up it's somewhere in that range. But again, my tank isn't on E, like ever. How much gas was in the tank before I filled up? I don't know. So a random mystery amount + anywhere from 5 to 9 gallons depending equals something I never cared to figure out.

Why. Why the hell is everyone so fixated on this. Everyone in the thread: "You don't know how big your tank is???? How do you even live??????" Me: "Uh, very easily....?" I don't know my computer monitor's resolution without looking it up. Same for my TV's resolution, or even size in inches. I don't know what kind of cartridges my printer takes without checking. Hell, I don't know what model printer I have without looking. I don't remember what brand my earbuds are. Is everyone gasping at all that too? How can I not know all this? Because none of it fucking matters, that's how! Who the fuck cares? The real world experience in the OP was purely for expositional purposes to explain how my train of thought got to what I THOUGHT was a bizarre thought that was the entire point of the thread, that apparently is, while still unreasonable in its own right, is still not as bizarre as not knowing how big one's gas tank is.

I don't entirely understand what you're describing in the part I highlighted but the parts above are good points.

I almost never let it get to the light. Right now my current routine is to fill up every thursday morning after my chiropractor appointment. That way, unless I do a lot more driving on any given weekend than I usually do, I have plenty of gas to for the weekend through my work week and fill up again the following thursday. My dad did a whole lot of driving for his career and when I started driving he told me he always fills his tank when it's about half empty because he didn't want to be stranded, and I kinda followed suit, just because, even though I never had to drive anywhere near aa much.

I was referring to this: I never trolled this person this was just a scenario my wandering brain came up with way after the fact. I thought the idea that you could ask for a billion dollars worth of gas with no consequences funny. And that just led my mind to demanding seeing the guy strike the 0 key nine times. As a hypothetical scenario this is funny to me but I'd never do that irl because I like to think I'm not an asshole.

83. Your point is I should know things that are and have always been completely irrelevant to my life (not basic math but how to pay for gas at the register). I mean not sure how I would do the math if I don't even know how big my tank is and didn't make it a point to notice the price of gas before I went in, so I just estimated and my estimation was pretty good.

I do not know how big my tank is. Doesn't matter to me. How much is the price? I glance when I'm at the pump and don't really give it much thought. Literally all my driving life I've never been in the mindset of "I need x amount of gallons of gas" or "I have x amount of dollars for gas." I go when I'm getting low and I fill it up completely. The gallons and dollars don't matter to me. You may think I'm the [redacted r-word] for this but you are old enough for when everyone was paying for gas at the pump register every single time. You probably got out the ol' checkbook to pay for gas, huh grandma? 😝

I've only ever payed for gas with the cashier twice in my life, both times because my gas card was declined, the second time happened today. I look like a total dink like I don't know what I'm doing because I do it so infrequently. So he tells me to just tell him a dollar amount and whatever doesn't get used goes back to my card. So I think of a number that should for sure fill my tank and say "$50." Sure enough, my tank fills at $40.00 and some change. I got to thinking though, what's to stop people from fucking with this dude and going "Give me one billion dollars worth of gas, please."? If you intended for your tank to be completely full, there is literally no negative consequence. At first I was thinking maybe the cashier would push back and be like, "sir, I cannot do that, give me a reasonable number," but then I thought about it and the cashier has no negative consequence of just rolling with the joke too, if they feel so inclined. But then, I thought of that you could really troll them. Like if your pump is gonna decline my card and make me come inside like it's the fucking dark ages, I'm gonna troll you because fuck you. "Give me one billion dollars worth of gas please. And don't just punch in 100, I want to see you punch that 0 key nine times! You think I won't count, but I will!"
