Tetsujin 28 2004.

I believe I found one of the best uses of licensed music in anime that didn’t stick in dubs since Speed Grapher replaced Duran Duran with a shitty instrumental.

On the one hand, Shane's finally dead. On the other, that was one hell of a redemption move he pulled off.

Also, it's nice to see that Itsuki's still the worst of the four heroes. At least Ren felt regretful over what his immediate departure from taking care of that dragon inadvertently caused.

The Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls Episode 17: "Where does this road lead to?"

The cold opening features Mika going about her business, but the background music sets up a dramatic event: they want her to drop her usual gyaru look for a new, more adult style. Oh, the horror! This is a prelude of Mishiro's general changes for 346pro. Sure, the agency has only been around for a few years, but it's an outcropping of a much larger entertainment company, and the new head executive is going to get her way, goddamnit. So what's going on in the idol department? TakeP wants to bolster the younger idols' profile with a new variety TV show called Totokira Academy, because that worked so well last time. All the lolis will be featured, including Miria and Rika, and Kirari and Airi will play the teachers. While everyone else that was cast is on board, Rika doesn't like the idea of having to wear a kindergarten outfit. And Miria has her own problem: she's been getting less attention from her mama because she's having to tend to her baby every time she cries. And Mika is a little peeved over Mishiro's executive meddling. Whatever are these idols to do if they want to save their business?

Eventually, it's Anzu and Kirari who save the day, at least for Rika. The former says that it doesn't matter what clothes they wear, because it's just for a job, while the latter replies by saying that clothes can make you happy, "[And] if you gussy it up to suit your own style, you get even happy-happier!" This is enough to placate her, and she eventually arrives at the taping flashing a peace sign and showing off her bag adorned with special decorations. Miria and Mika end up getting rid of their grumbles with a trip out doing fun things like karaoke and shopping. Though we haven't seen the fruits of this show yet, it seems like it's going to be a success.

No-frills episode this time, though the soundtrack has little chill and could stand to be a little less melodramatic. At least Rika sulking in her mood and hugging her big rhinoceros beetle plushie is a mood. The race to finish this show before Mobamas shuts down at the end of March (and by extension, the U149 anime starts in early April) is on.

Random thoughts:

  • Did this episode predict the U149 anime? I don't think so, but the average TVTropes editor probably believes otherwise.
  • Rika has men at her school! Speaking of a horror anime. One of them gives her shit for being a little kid, but she responds by bragging that she caught more beetles on a field trip than them.
  • Making a cameo appearance is Pinya Korata, the big ugly [citation needed] green cat mascot that's sort of a mascot for CG as a whole, voiced by Uzuki's seiyuu. Green hair is better, after all.
  • Clockwatch: The minute hand goes from 11:52 to 11:53 right as the credits start. Foreboding.
  • I had a meme prepared for this, but I couldn't find it. Oh well. It was just a photoshop of Miria with a dead look in her eyes offering you a Google Play card. Hardly a meme, honestly. I'll see what I can do for the remainder of these columns, but I've also had thoughts about dropping the memes altogether. Maybe you should chime in.
  • Rated TV-PG. Ugh, not again.
  • Oh hey, I almost forgot to mention this! New iM@S branch on the way, and it'll have VTubers. It's called vα-liv. Here's the official announcement for it:

It ties into the "3.0 Vision" project, which is going to start in full for the franchise's 20th anniversary in 2025. It seems to involve integrating the metaverse with iM@S, because that stuff is sometimes called "Web 3.0", and iM@S has already had its 1st and 2nd Visions, though the latter amounted to just redesigns for the OG cast, so they could look good for the anime. If crypto stuff is involved with this, then I don't want no part of it. So this franchise may be going down the shitter as they try to add NFTs and shit to the existing branches. But hey, if that's the case, we've still got at least two years' worth of semen great content on the way. And Touhou, which is eternal, because ZUN's too drunk to know what a blockchain is.

Idol roundup:

  • Kaoru (new voice): 9, Passion-type. Nothing more than a rambunctious little kid, except for when she wears an unusually-sexy white swimsuit.
  • Momoka (new voice): 12, Cute-type. A real doll, doll. Dresses in cute lolita-like outfits and likes tea parties. Unrelated to Masahiro Sakurai, and the other one.
  • Nina: 9, Passion-type. These two 9 year olds are among the three youngest in the franchise, and they all hail from CG. This one prefers the other type of kigurumi, really the only one before animegao connoisseurs co-opted the term. Well maybe I'm attracted to the other kind of floof, huh? Nina is definitely a kid but has some layers, which includes, shocker, parental neglect. She sometimes finds her way into weird memes, and I'll have to post one of those at some point. Voiced by Misaki Kuno, whom I gave a shout out to recently. If you watched the sub for Made in Abyss S2, you heard her blow out her voice and then some as Faputa. Fortunately she was given lots of empathetic care while in the booth, which is maybe more than you can say for some American VAs.

Music review:

  • "Watashi-iro Gift": Sung by Dekoration plus Mika. It's got horns, which makes it pretty cool. Wish any hot new jamming acts were covering this. Sadly, the ED edit for this one does it no favors. Why do they have to have people talking over it (the actual ED part of it is shortened) plus a removal of the short vamp before the ending?

Metropoliman's dead, and in a deservedly over-the-top violent fashion at that. Mukaido's own passing was done with grace and elegance, way more than any of the fatalities I've seen Shittoki incur. And Mirai wasn't outwardly obnoxious about his "no one should ever kill for any reason ever" thing for once! Yeah, this hiatus point's a 9/10 in my book. I'd say 9/11, but we're still under a year away from being allowed to joke about that per the South Park rule.

The Dr. Yoneda saga coming to my watchlist whenever my out-of-seasonals are filled with nothing but rom-com, CGDCT, iyashikei and trashy ecchi shows.
