1pooh4u Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 A federal district court in DC ruled to uphold the law that will force TikTok to be sold, breaking ties with its Chinese parent company ByteDance, or be banned in the US come mid January https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-ban-court-ruling-china-6bfd505295ad44126df0544fc083d6a6 is TikTok that bad? Is it any more dangerous to US citizens than X? What information is China supposedly gathering from its users? Quote
katt_goddess Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 The problem is that one of the things they are claiming is being done is manipulating information. Which you've already mentioned 'x' right away is exactly what 'x' does without giving any sort of shit whatsoever. I really want to say that the info China supposedly collects is roughly the same amount of info the average person posts on their social media pages to begin with anyway and slightly less than what happens when you buy from Wish or Temu. The whole TikTok bad thing honestly blew up because people used it to organize ticket request blitzes for one of Drumpf's shit-festival rallies, he bragged about how it had sold out completely with a waiting list of even more people wanting to attend and then he showed up and the place was mostly empty. Suddenly it was bad because it hurt his fee-fees and there's been a scramble ever since to punish it. 1 Quote

Part was that China could step in and declare any company in China the property of the state, in that case, everything ever put on TT could be used by them. The other piece I believe was that an audit found that TT was on US Gov't official's phones. 4 Quote

That’s kinda dumb though isn’t it? To have apps like TikTok or any social media app on a phone that is used for sensitive business? 2 Quote

The other piece I believe was that an audit found that TT was on US Gov't official's phones. Government officials shouldn't have frickin' TikTok on their sensitive phones anyway. There's a reason the higher up you are, the more likely you'll be supplied with a specific phone for your job. Plus, pretty sure far too many of those officials were just using it to creep on underaged users anyway. Looking at you, Gaetz. And most places that host things tend to have a disclaimer of some sort that you post things at your own risk because they can use what you post for whatever they want. Even the old [ asmb ] had that in the ToS as a perpetual butt-cover for themselves. I don't have nor will ever likely have a TikTok account because it stinks of Rick it's a very web-cammy thing and I'm about as photogenic as Sasquatch but a power blanket ban on something that people are actively using to earn a living without there being any viable alternatives offered to move to just seems like a bitch move. 3 Quote
MasqueradeOverture Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 But an alternative start up WILL pop up on day -1 and early adopters WILL make a shitload of money... ..except it'll be run by DOGE and signing up will be mandatory for every citizen. 1 Quote
Winter_Rain Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 IDK how I feel about this. On the one hand there are definitely shady political motives behind this. On the other hand everything I know about TikTok is against my will and it seems to amplify the voices of incredibly dumb and/or misinformed people without offering much of value to society. 2 Quote

My sense of it is that there is some risk of foreign influence both in personal data and in the algorithm, but the absolute ban is probably as much for the benefit of its American competitors and that there are probably much less extreme alternatives. 2 1 Quote

Yeah idk either. I guess it should be left up to whoever wants to use the app? The government should honestly and plainly say exactly what the app collects from its users. Allow people to be informed and decide risk from there. 2 Quote
