Watching My 600 lb Life

And I wonder how some of these people on welfare can afford to eat such amounts to get that fat. Clearly they do eat a lot, but I think most of their intake comes from sugary beverages. You can buy several thousand calories of soda for 10 dollars.

Just because you can buy the food with SNAP benefits doesn't mean its good for you. Plus plenty of them have additional sources of income and food from family and friends and being disabled.

Also .... those people eat a shit ton. You just haven't watched it enough.

Have breakfast made by a family member, get second breakfast from fastfood (maybe third breakfast), snacks, dinner, 2nd dinner, dessert. I've literally seen a woman eat 3 whole meals from Arby's in one sitting.

I’ve always found this show fascinating, which my family always thought was odd. But as someone who has struggled with weight myself, I can relate to some of what they’re going through. Now I’ve never been 600 pounds and cooking fried chicken in my bed, but I do know how difficult it is to break some of those bad eating habits. I guess I just want to see them succeed...

But yes, as Vamped mentioned, these people aren’t just eating unhealthy foods. They are eating frequently and eating huge portions. And a lot of times have family and friends making/bringing them the food

I'll add that if some of those folks had chronic illnesses, it's pretty good odds that their prescriptions also caused weight gain. Some drugs can help you pack on over 100 pounds in less than a year, and your doctor might even feel like that's not an important fact to know.

um... my pills and a thyroid issue  caused me to gain 100 lbs... but i didnt start eating 12 meals a day! now come on!!

Theres a lot of trauma in their backgrounds too. Sexual abuse and mental illness is a common theme. I know Ive seen a few where they were big but mobile and then one injury or one hospitalization and they never got back up

yah theres lot of sexual abuse.. but i research sexual abuse for a book i was writing. i share a lot of their ptsd symptoms .. basically i have a lot of indicators of trauma in my life as well.. i still dont eat 5 big macs in one sitting. i still think theres a level of choice and just giving up to food addiction going on there.

i also see a lot of them being resistant to therapy and people trying to help them.... theres people out there trying to get all the help they can get and trying to get better.

i guess i just see these people as just giving up

People dont deal with trauma the same way. People choose various maladaptive coping mechanisms drugs, alcohol, sex, and food to name a few. Depression can make you want to give up.

The weight gets packed on over a long amount of time too. If you weigh 150lbs today, you change nothing else, you can achieve 600 lbs in 5 years by adding just 863 calories to your everyday diet.

Not really. Your body mass affects your basal metabolic rate, and you need significantly more than a 863 calorie stable increase from your current caloric intake to attain 600 lbs. Where did you get this number from anyway?

Only adding muscle will increase your bmr, not fat. The calculators are an estimate. Without body fat %, you can't calculate w/complete accuracy. If you want to pick apart my 863 calories, point out how you'd have to decrease physical activity as well for it to be accurate bc as you carry the extra weight, you'll expend more energy doing the same amount of physical activity. So if you don't live a sedentary lifestyle, you'll need more than 863. A 600lb person for instance burns a ton of calories just walking. But if you already sit and lay around all day, 863 will be about enough. If it's not enough wait 5 1/2 or 6 years instead. Any increase in calories burned will be covered by that. Unless you're like an on foot mailman or something.

What network does that air on? TLC?

Yeah, TLC. It's worth watching. The doctor is unitentiinally hilarious. And some of the people make the most bizarre excuses for their actions.
