ben0119
But Demarco claims that Toonami is a boutique thing lululul. Oh yeah, Dragon Ball, Naruto, My Hero Academia, Black Clover, so fucking boutique. I mean maybe JoJo because that is weird shit and certainly they didn't have to get that. What else? Hellsing Ultimate, Black Lagoon, Parasyte, maybe Megalobox, Space Dandy which they actually funded, Deadman Wonderland. Other stuff like Casshern and Samurai 7 you could classify but they only got because that's all they could afford at the time. The Viewer Apathy Dynamo ORIGINAL TOONAMI ORIGINAL IGPX! Also the only one that was an original concept and not a sequel or adaptation to something else. =3 Hunter x Hunter - Only THE FINEST OF CONNUISOURS can truly perceive and appreciate this brilliant subversion of the shonen genre! The1gairon
I do. Now we only get those shows on occasion like once a year.
Blatch
Yes. For as good as Mob Psycho and Megalobox are, both shows had a lot of people saying they'd be good for Toonami, especially in the latter's case. I even had one guy on my Twitter feed say how great it is that Toonami is airing the show, because it's similar to when Cowboy Bebop was airing in 2002. I hope a truly "out there" pickup will result as part of the Crunchyroll alliance, and that could manifest as soon as next month. But until then, my opinions of Toonami will still be low. For me, part of Toonami's appeal has been being able to watch less obvious (if not obscure) stuff like Michiko & Hatchin next to the usual shonen favorites. They're not required, but they make things more fun.

CaptainStarwind
Oh yeah, I definitely miss it. Toonami used to be able to surprise us with show picks all the time. They weren't always the newest shows, or the most popular, and sometimes they weren't even what a lot of people wanted. But I always enjoyed it. I never knew what was going to show up. It seems that all they do now is find whatever action show is both, a. Popular, and b. Not currently licensed to Netflix and they just put it on the block. We can pretty much predict the shows now. It's not a matter or what, but of when.
OwlChemist81
I'd say it still happens from time to time. Pop Team Epic was certainly rather surprising!
Blatch
Actually, PPTP wasn't a surprise at all. When DeMarco said Toonami was going to start airing comedy anime, this was the first one people zeroed in on, because it was recent and Kim Manning said she liked it. Daos
It's still PTE. A low budget meme comedy that repeats itself with different voices after 15 minutes? The only other surprise would be delving back into sports anime with Megalo. Everything else was a predictable pickup... MHA, Mob, the FLCLS,, Jojo, Boruto. That's all 8 shows for 2018. PTE followed by Megalo no question.

Blatch
Megalobox wasn't a surprise either. There were people who called it airing on Toonami from the first weeks it aired, thanks to it being entertaining and having a music-heavy style. And when Viz got it, the calls for Toonami only accelerated, as they're seemingly the only company willing to work with them on most acquired shows nowadays. What was the last show for the block that a majority of this fandom didn't predict? Gundam Unicorn?

Objectively, Tenchi Muyo! GXP. The unprecedented return of IGPX might count, but considering that was Toonami to begin with, it doesn't count. No one thought Toonami would touch that show with a ten foot pole after the backlash it got, and yet... they did. I don't think anyone really saw that coming. If you want to go back to a show that just got pulled from thin air that had no name rec...... you'd have to go back to Dimension W. Heck, I personally called Dimension W on Twitter. That one had Funimation on the production committee (meaning cheap TV rights to anyone who'd want to bother with it) while BC was spearheaded by the Japanese companies to the point where many figured Toonami would air it for really cheap. I also saw someone call Dimension W on 4chan's Toonami discussion. But GXP... absolutely no one could have predicted that. Hell, even those wanting more Tenchi had a higher likeliness of pulling for War on Geminar, despite its weird episode lengths.

I'm actually gonna say Bort's the biggest surprise for 2018, just because Naruto's still years away from ending on the block. It just seems weird to have the sequel now when the original still has hundreds of episodes to air.
Blatch
We have a whole thread for that, so yeah. However, people have been making these predictions because they see the overall anime landscape and can predict what Toonami will air as a business move. It's because of this that I want us to go back to subjectivity being the driving force behind predictions, but that doesn't have to do with the topic of the thread.

CountFrylock
seems like demarco and crew are too afraid of taking any kind of risk that they'll just grab whatever's popular at the moment and shove it in... that fear will hurt them in the long run.... That's the vibe I've been getting from them for the past couple of years. While, admittedly, some of these pickups are really good, I'd really like it if Toonami went back to the days of one or two big announcements a year, with smaller, shorter, and lower key shows the rest of the time. It wouldn't surprise me if Toonami wanted to play it this way (grab whatever popular show they can) from the very beginning of the revival. Their low budget would have precluded that, though, so they were forced to go with cheaper shows, and save the budget for a big pickup. I enjoyed significantly more in those days than I do now. I thought we were talking about shows that went out of the usual shonen or action mold, not just what people didn't predict. In that case, nothing is a surprise, because @OwlChemist81 predicts everything under the sun. But I wouldn't count people predicting shows as them being predictable picks, either, because Toonami has either passed on or been prevented from acquiring many shows that would have been perfect for the block.
OwlChemist81
I missed a few. Remember when I said Re:Zero would replace Gundam IBO and we got MHA instead? I only predict the obvious, like Gundam Origin will get the Gundam Unicorn treatment and end up with a simuldub; only THIS time it will end up on Toonami instead of Daisuki to replace Gundam IBO Season 2! Blatch
More of Re:Zero's dub is coming in February, at least on Blu-ray. It's been finished for a while, but was delayed due to problems with the first set regarding bad picture quality. I don't know why they're waiting to post a dub that's been finished for months, but whatever. Few people care about it anymore.

That makes no sense. Crunchyroll commissioned the dub for Mob, it wasn't part of FUNi's Simuldub initiative. I swear, think through what you write before posting. You just look lazy otherwise. 1
