My friend had a hog butchered.

I've done it before,  it's not for the faint of heart but it's so much better than store bought. I've also helped butcher and castrate bore, not in that order mind you.

then, when i point out that it kills my interest, the response is a speech about how it's important to give the animal as good a life as possible before you butcher it, as if that doesn't encourage additional anthropomorphism of my food 

this is why jesus invented the supermarket

It just tastes so much better than the slop fed feeders you get in a supermarket.  I won't be giving a speech about it living any better,  it's a pig, pigs don't care as long as they are fed. I will just say that we feed them better, resulting in a healthier animal. Sausage you buy in a supermarket also has sugar added. For the life of me I can't understand why you would want to add sugar.

bacon is great, don't get me wrong. but i feel like uncured pork belly, roasted with a little sweet and savory, is what the gods would eat if they were real.

I love a good uncured roast. Cooked low and slow with some onions, garlic and carrots. Just a dash of salt and pepper...... I  just came, or for the easily offended, arrived.

At least they didnt hog it. Sounds like they went ham with variety. I bet the story isnt at all boaring. Must of been a difficult tusk to complete.
