The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board

I don't believe it will hurt it as bad as you think it will. I think it's down to its core right now. Plus, this IS a PPV. Live cable events seem to hurt worse. But I believe Live PD will get utterly trashed and college football will just keep the beatings coming.

Wow, AOT still airing? I didn't see that coming!! If the status quo remains, then that would put it ending Oct. 14 and that slot opening up Oct. 21. I would have hoped we wouldn't lose 8 PM hour to the TTGo Network but that strange development seems to indicate we will. I'd say it's probable that Super premieres continue at 9 PM, with Toonami starting once again at 11:30. I just hate that Toonami can't seem to keep a consistent schedule these days because that's what it takes to build ratings.

And the way our luck will go, ratings will start picking up around that time as people finally get used to Toonami at 11. I personally think that they should leave it for an extended time to give it a chance to work. This will also be the time where a marathon is going to occur every 4 weeks which also throws people off!

Maybe we'll get lucky and just lose one Super and one Rick on the front end.  The Titan thing could be a limitation on how many DBZs can run a night as well. It was originally announced as nine episodes. The 7/4/15 marathon according to Preflight had a similar reason for having a Titan rerun at the end!

You're right. One other thing that doesn't add up is that now the AOT that precedes the last episode of Jack will be Episode 7. That means there would be 5 episodes left to double-up if expanding Toonami to 3:30. That's awkward.

Wait, you're right. The odd "92-101" numbering scheme of Jack throws me off. This week will be "C", or 100, which is actually Season 5, Episode 9, and then the week of 9/2 will be Season 5, Episode 10. That means AOT #32 & #33 would be paired the following week, #34 & #35 the next, and #36 and #37 the next, which would be 9/23, then new rerun begins 9/30. I would like to see Samurai Champloo get a 2nd HD run!

What's weird is the episode listed for 9/2 "Charge" is episode 11!!

The only thing that makes sense (if not an error) is that they need to hurry up the run and either ditch the time-slot or something new is coming.

DeMarco has not ever mentioned ratings in Pre-Flight for months by now.  I think he's under network pressure to keep it mum.

The last thing anyone wants to do is call attention to the ratings being in the dump. That's a fast way to talk yourself out of a job.

Still, this would be my "as consistent as possible" arrangement for Oct. 7:

11:30 DBS

12 AM DBZKFC

12:30 Gundam IBO

1 AM Hunter × Hunter

1:30 JJBA: SC

2 AM Shippuden

2:30 Outlaw Star

3 AM Lupin the 3rd

3:30 Rerun TBD

This way, Gundam would directly replace Ghoul, and the 3 best performers that aren't DBZ (assuming pre-emptively based on impressive trending for Outlaw Star) would get to keep their timeslots. JoJo and Lupin would be the only two shows dropping considerably.

Then again, I don't really think that's going to happen, and I have no qualms with Greed Island Arc of H×H ending up back at 1:30.

That line up is all kinds of depressing.

The guy complains, but he was able to get Super and TG. Was Netflix just smart enough to avoid these two?

Ghoul has been on Hulu fully dubbed for awhile, which is why Toonami picking it up and airing it in an early timeslot wasn't a good choice.

With Super, he lucked out because TOEI still thinks it's the 1980s and big TV deals are where it's at. I think for this reason AS makes more money off if Super than other shows. Hence why they can air it so much and they get to giveaway Super merchandise.

That and Attack on Titan reruns will move to the top of the block back to episode 1!!

We need to resimulate 2014 in order to get the block cut in order to resimulate the legendary ratings year of 2015!

Next : Month of old movies in December

Granted, if they actually did that, I would be ecstatic, but that would be a REALLY bad idea.

[unless this time they can air it uncensored]

But I gotta say that "Charge" has to be an error. There's no way they would skip from #30 to #36, right??

Mediocrity is the name of the game. And besides, nobody will care if the block is only two-and-a-half hours again.

Well, Outlaw Star didn't top Shippuden, but it did do a LOT better than GITS was doing in that timeslot!

Edit: Hunter x Hunter added:

11:30 PM DBZ Kai: The Final Chapters 822,000

12:00 AM JJBA: Stardust Crusaders 687,000 (83.58%)

12:30 AM Tokyo Ghoul 637,000 (92.72%)

1:00 AM Hunter × Hunter 601,000 (94.35%)

1:30 AM Lupin The 3rd 508,000 (84.53%)

2:00 AM Naruto: Shippuden 483,000 (95.08%)

2:30 AM Outlaw Star 456,000 (94.41%)

I'm glad this is an improvement. But I won't be truly happy until 1 million is the norm again.

I said it before and I'll say it again: if Toonami ends again, I won't be mad this time, even if I was before in 2008. I'm older, wiser, and more jaded to showing my emotions.  If it ends, I'll move on and watch my amine where I want, when I want, and try to talk with people online about it, even though we will no longer be able to do that at the exact same time of the day.  I cut cable 3 months ago, it won't affect me as much as it did 9 years ago.

Dragon Ball Super at 11 PM got 919K/567K.

That puts the average for the block well over 600K, and thus makes it the highest since 7/8.

I got 618K/383K 18-49 for the average. That's not too shabby!

Also of note is that DBS at 8:30 beat BOTH Rick & Mortys!!

8:30 DBS is quickly picking up steam. If they replace the 9:00 Rick and Morty and are able to put an airing of Bob's Burgers or American Dad there instead, that might be enough to optimize ratings for primetime.

Toonami line-up seems fine looking at the retention. Most shows are going to drop a fair amount following Dragon Ball since that audience is a little unique, so you can't blame Jojo too much for that.

They might be thinking of sliding Lupin back since it looks like Shippuden and maybe even Outlaw Star are stronger shows, but the small gain might not be worth it.

Have I mentioned that Dragonball is genuinely considered popular while Hiatus...isn't?  FUNi found a lot of starting NFL players to interview about DB for their Super and Kai disc sets.  I have met some genuine badasses that wax nostalgic about the show.

It was a thing.  The rest of Toonami...not so much.

3:30 AM Samurai Jack (NPOT) 255,000 (102.82%)

TOONAMI TOTAL VIEWERS AVERAGE - 383,222

As previously mentioned, 8:30 PM DBS continues to impress, gaining on its lead-in by over 44% in 18-49 and actually edging out the 9:30 Rick & Morty in total viewers! The rest of Toonami, no so much, as the 11 PM Super always tumbles markedly from Family Guy and then JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders tumbles from there, although the drop wasn't as bad in Adults 18-49. That pattern doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon, but things ARE gradually improving!

Finally...

You need a huge current hit with Western appeal to hold Kai, like MHA, Mob Psycho or Re Zero.

One Punch man actually gained on Kai some nights, but OPM level hits are few and far between.

MHA: taken by a streaming network, implied to be Netflix

Mob Psycho: no word on the status of this, but Crunchyroll/Funimation still has the rights to distribute\

Re Zero: no American distributor. No dub.

Funimation will probably be the de facto distributor if it gets dubbed. I can't guarantee this, however, since Viz recently got Mr. Osomatsu out of NOWHERE and will be dubbing it themselves.

This is what sucks about the current setup on the block. The lineup is locked until January and there won't be any space for awhile. If Funimation were to get Re:Zero and Toonami doesn't have a slot open, they probably won't wait and it'll go to their service and Toonami can't get it as a dub premiere.

But it sounds like something that could do very well if they get it first.

Nah no way it's Funimation, they never take this long.

It's gotta be Sentai.

Also of note, the week after both Tokyo Ghoul and Shippuden's Pain arc end is when [as] loses an hour to Cartoon Network. I'm not saying Toonami's gonna shrink an hour, but shrinking by half of that wouldn't be out of character, considering the timing and everyone saying that 175 would be the perfect place to stop Shippuden's run.

I think most likely we are going to lose one of the Ricks and Supers on the front end. Toonami may shift, but probably won't lose slots. Although I'm not opposed to dropping Shippuden.

What the hell??

Also, I will ask in a tweet to @adultswim, @stupidgill, and @clarknova1 what's up with "Charge", episode #36, being listed as AOT's episode for 9/2, following "Historia," episode #30, the week before, but not UNTIL it appears on the OFFICIAL [adult swim] schedule, which will happen no sooner than Saturday morning.

Calling attention to the "backdoor", "better" schedule is a really bad idea.

Yeah if that happens all Toonami schedules will be blanked out.  This is a main reason the "paper" schedule went away. Some stuff leaked early and Demarco was pissed.

You're welcome to try though if it's a legitimate screw up they'd like to know. It kind of already is official since it's showing up that way on my DVR.
