Yeah. He paces it so that what might seem like bad news has a relatively happy ending in context. It serves to give a sobering picture of the times without burdening the individual with it.

Anyway, it sounds to me like you're still kind of feeling each other out. The fact that he does want to rub your leg but isn't just moving in on that means he seems to have at least set boundaries and is waiting for you to reciprocate. That seems pretty promising to me, but now you have to let him know what you're expecting out of your interaction with him.
