People dont deal with trauma the same way. People choose various maladaptive coping mechanisms drugs, alcohol, sex, and food to name a few. Depression can make you want to give up.

Theres a lot of trauma in their backgrounds too. Sexual abuse and mental illness is a common theme. I know Ive seen a few where they were big but mobile and then one injury or one hospitalization and they never got back up

Just because you can buy the food with SNAP benefits doesn't mean its good for you. Plus plenty of them have additional sources of income and food from family and friends and being disabled. Have breakfast made by a family member, get second breakfast from fastfood (maybe third breakfast), snacks, dinner, 2nd dinner, dessert. I've literally seen a woman eat 3 whole meals from Arby's in one sitting.
