It's just across the border - give it ten years and some sabotage and that could be the follow-up story.

Honestly as silly as this story reads, it is a little disturbing to have to think about how pharmaceutical research is based around breeding monkeys to test on.

I think sec. 230 immunity for online platforms might preempt that stuff. -

2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences
Raptorpat replied to NewBluntsworth's topic in Current Events
That's true, both because that constituency is under represented in the early races and because it's the constituency that saved his campaign. I think a one-for-one with Iowa made sense and no one would've batted an eye other than impotent Iowa Dems, but I think taking NH out at the same time wasn't worth the risk and effort it originally presented. But they won the write-in campaign and with Trump the near-inevitable nominee it might not matter. -
Gov Abbott declares he can invade Mexico
Raptorpat replied to matrixman124's topic in Current Events
Basically TX put up razor wire to prevent crossings and refused to allow the border patrol to access, they're litigating over who can do what right now. And there was a big incident where a mom and kids drowned trying to cross. SCOTUS just issued an emergency decision (5/4, roberts and ACB joined the three libs) the other day that authorized the feds to cut the state's wires to access the border and do their job while the main litigation proceeds. I don't interpret this letter as "TX thinks it can invade Mexico" so much as it is TX challenging federalism and the fed-state relationship and balance of powers. Which to me kind of puts it more in the "1860s" bucket. -

what state is she currently a resident of? NY added a private right of action to sue for the dissemination of deepfake "revenge porn". not sure that he could be on the hook as a nonresponsive platform and not the actual uploader. -
2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences

To be fair his team ran an active write-in campaign, it's not like people all wrote his name completely independently. I'm kind of of the mindset that dethroning Iowa was a rational choice with no real downside, but there wasn't a great reason to pick a fight with swingy NH as well. It was probably more because Biden came in like 5th there last time. -

actually I'm seeing stuff that it was supposed to be a trump blowout and other stuff that said roughly this margin so I don't know what the general consensus was and I'm not going back to look because I'm up too late -

Donald Trump won the primary, which I think basically cements that he's the guy unless something happens in the courts before the primary ends. But I'm pretty sure this is a major underperformance compared to expectations, which isn't exactly a great sign for him. Even if Haley's numbers were inflated by independent voters, that would still imply that he's still toxic to independent voters. Biden also won the (unofficial) primary as a write-in candidate, Murkowski style. As of right now, Dean Phillips got beat by *checks notes* "unprocessed write-ins" and Marianne Williamson didn't even win enough to make it out of the "other candidates" tab. But also note that turn out on either side was extremely small, which kind of says a lot in its own right. -
I'm very sorry to hear about everything and you have my condolences, but also welcome back. We're still in the business of general nostalgia, even if the anniversary is over. I know we have a boardiversary thread in .com and we may also still have a shout out or general nostalgia thread (can't remember but at work and trying to be quick) for that type of stuff. Someone from the old boards told me a long time ago that the reason we'd all stuck around that long (at the time) was because "we were all broken." They didn't mean that in a negative way, but rather we all had a hole in our lives, whether socially, family emotionally, or otherwise, and this community in one way or another somehow managed to fill that void in our lives. I tend to think that it's probably true, and I think that it's all the more reason to want to keep this place around. Traffic ebs and flows from month to month, but people keep coming back whether routinely or just from time to time because they have that connection. There's definitely value here even if we're a bunch of grumpy old farts, and I guess that's all I'm trying to say.

kind of tertiary to everything to the extent that it impacts European decision-making, but the EU is stomping its feet in an attempt to consider doing something other than stomping its feet about Hungary. https://www.politico.eu/article/european-parliament-hungary-voting-rights-rule-of-law-viktor-orban/
