What did you have for dinner? NOT a discussion thread.
Jman replied to The_annoying_one's topic in General Discussion
Slow cooker ribs, cornbread, and salad. The slow cooker is a wonder if you know how to use it. My tomato sauce is made with that. -
I'm a believer that there's a Gundam for everyone, given the franchise's history. It depends on what you want. Gunpla is freedom, after all, meaning that while there's certain shows that are considered good and bad, there's no "wrong" way to approach the franchise. Except G-Savior. That's wrong. G is my admitted favorite but it's also an unabashed shounen action series that appeals to people who like Street Fighter and DBZ, rather than the real robot military drama Gundam is known for. If you want something more akin to a modern J-Drama, watch SEED. If you want that textual yuri or happened to be a fan of the Fire Emblem games, watch Witch from Mercury. If you want to watch the original series, watch the movie trilogy, because it's more tightly plotted, and they fix animation errors and get rid of some of the sillier corporate mandates. From there, it's easy to go to Zeta, ZZ, and Char's Counterattack. If you want social commentary with your Gundam, watch 00. I stand by a statement I've made a few times, that 00 is Wing if Wing made sense. And if you just want to get into model kit building, watch Build Fighters.

fooly cooly FLCL: Season 1 Re-run/Re-watch
Jman replied to AnimationFan14's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
This is roughly the 20th anniversary of FLCL first airing on Adult Swim. That’s the good part. -
I won't lie, if DeMarco has credits as a writer, he might just call the whole thing off in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and the WGA. I would not put it past him.

Expect to see this a lot these next few months.

They Cloned Tyrone - 8.5/10. John Boyega purposefully chose the biggest 180 from Finn possible. It’s a clear Blaxploitation riff that works due to Boyega and Jaime Foxx having the acting chops and charisma to make the kind of weird plot work.

My Adventures with Superman Episode 3 Talkback
Jman replied to Jman's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Yeah, I see the issue with the episodes. The pilot despite being an hour, was counted as Episode 1, not 1 and 2. Thread description updated.- 51 replies

My Adventures with Superman Episode 3 Talkback
Jman replied to Jman's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
I’d say it’s more they needed an evil genius type since they purposefully don’t want to use Lex Luthor just yet.- 51 replies

Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Superman! Yes, Superman! Strange visitor from another planet, who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men! Superman, who disguised as Clark Kent, mild mannered reporter intern for a great metropolitan newspaper, fights a never-ending battle for truth, justice, and the American Way!

Finished the rest of the second half of S2 of Record of Ragnarok. Haven’t marathoned a show like that in a while.

I still have no idea why AMC bought Sentai. Even with their weird lineup of shows, they seem happy to let it operate as its own thing. No one has even suggested HIDIVE join AMC+, which is especially surprising given how big a train wreck AMC+ is. They don’t have any plans to air the programs on their linear channel, and I don’t see an AMC produced Oshi no Ko series airing anytime soon.

IIRC it ended when Manga Entertainment itself threw in the towel on business as a whole, since them (and Viz) were the main suppliers. There was a point where they were airing Gurren Lagann and Gundam 00 and were legit competition…then the recession hit and anime sales as a whole were down, not picking up again until streaming came into its own. So we never did get to see Monster finish its run. If an ASA/Toonami competitor besides Ani-Monday had a chance, it was before 2016. That’s when the migration to streaming services began in earnest, along with Netflix pushing anime next to other shows as a reason to get their service. After that point, it was kind of unnecessary. Linear channels continue to shed viewers for everything that isn’t a live event or sports programming. And that trend doesn’t seem to be reversing any time soon.

Considering SAG-AFTRA is going on strike tomorrow if their concerns about AI aren’t addressed, I’d wager “not well.”

Coincidentally or not, every major animated Superman series starts with him fighting robots. The Fleschier shorts have the Mechanical Monsters, the Ruby Spears series’ first episode is him fighting Lex Luthor’s vigilante robots, the Defendroids, and STAS’s pilot movie has Malcom McDowell steal a robotic powered armor and use it to fight Superman. Funny little legacy.

These days they split the order in half and call the second half “Season 2.” Makes the show seem more successful. Velma wouldn’t have justified a second season otherwise.

One last, super ultra nit picky point of contention. They’re doing an anime ED, but with generic music. You’re Warner. You can spring for a song that fits better. Hell that one’s OWNED by Warner Music Group!
