A new block, “Checkered Past,” will debut under the Adult Swim banner — on the channel it shares with Cartoon Network — starting August 28 on Monday through Friday at 6 p.m. It will be a showcase for Cartoon Network throwback titles like

Dexter’s Laboratory, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy, replacing a rotation of Cartoon shows like Teen Titans Go!

Hell yes.

Damn that would have been something to give the kids during the summer season. Most of those shows were super nostalgic for me during summer vacation, especially Ed, Edd n' Eddy, but better late than never, I like this kind of block.

Wow, they are actually doing exactly what people asked for.

I think this really shows how devastated the Cartoon Network brand is if they aren’t willing to have this be a CN thing. People loved it in October during the 30 year event. But, as the numbers have shown, it’s mostly adults tuning in, and these cartoons appeal most to 20 somethings. Definitely will have this on for background noise when I can.

Love the name. I don’t know how well this will go but I think it’s a fun use of their massive library.

Maybe they should have tried it under the CN banner but they’re going hard after the nostalgic 18-49s and being on AS makes more sense for the ad-space.

Do You Think The Cartoon Network Brand has any future outside catering to nostalgic adults?

I'm not sure if Max would really do much with the branding moving forward

It’s not looking good on that front. Kids aren’t watching cable and the CN brand means very little to them.

What's weird to me is despite cable tv being a relic of the past....Companies like disney are now having to cut back on producing streaming content because they invested too much into it and saw little to no profits from all that spending

That name sounds like this is being done under duress.

‘Oughta be fun to see if the kids watch.

right now it feels like Adultswim's name makes less and less sense as they gain more time

Adultswim makes sense when it's "Kids out adults in" but if adults are the only ones watching then does adult even need to be in the name?

especially when you start mixing in cartoon network content

Streaming isn’t profitable enough on its own unless it is ad-supported. No one wants to pay for multiple services every month and subscriptions are declining after they hit new highs during lock down. Netflix and Hulu worked when they were the only major services but now no one can hold subscribers like before.

Kids in particular are watching videos on YouTube and TikTok when they have control of what they are watching.

So Where do we go from here since streaming services aren't the future everyone thought they would be and nobody wants to go back to Cable TV

Companies wish people would go back to cable television but that won't happen

I think because of its worldwide presence, they will keep CN alive, even if only for an hour or two per day. It’s worth just enough to not let it die completely on US cable.

Streaming is still going to be the future. People are never going back to how cable worked. Where streaming needs to fix itself is cutting back on projects. Before, it was green lights for everything. Now, it needs to be green lights only for things they think people will like.

What I think streaming really needs is some kind of third party mediator that will offer various stream services under a single bill. Yes, I see the irony of how that is exactly like cable, but it’s the only way to get over this current hurdle of people being frustrated over excess subscriptions. I don’t know how it would work or the legal requirements to put it together, but it’s the best path forward. For example, imagine you buy the Toonamiguy Extra Premium package that gives you Hulu, Netflix and Max for a low price that is slightly cheaper than buying all 3 individually. Pick up the Toonamiguy Extra Premium with Happy Ending package and you get the porno channel in there too. Discreet and unlisted on your credit card bill, so no one will know Longschlonglord69 is paying for porn.

I wonder if, with this being Adult Swim and all, they'll have free reign to air Rude Removal.

Should be a safe bet, they’re the ones who officially unearthed the episode after all. And it was showcased again just recently on their Genndy highlight stream promoting UWE.

If they really wanted the brownie points, that’d be the first Dexter ep they’d air on that block.

It is more than likely that we will see a consolidation in the future. Through rights acquisitions and outright mergers we will probably see all the content aggregated into a couple of the big names. Companies like Hulu, YouTube, etc. have tons of cable style programming and on-demand content. Over the coming years I expect companies like them to take over. People are still waiting for when Disney incorporates Hulu into its UI, but personally I like the Hulu layout haha

On streaming - I've described myself as a zealot for the CONCEPT of streaming because I believe it leads to the democratization of media.  Things that would never be localized became big hits, shows that would never see the light of day got budgets behind them...but, and this is a big BUT, we've seen the end of the salad days of streaming.  The "Make product and gain subscriber at any cost" mentality is gone because the products are now lined up in such a way that you need to be profitable since the venture capital for the shiny new thing has run out.  Even Zaslav has mentioned that he sees streaming services being bundled together as the future, and Verizon is already doing so to entice people to buy its stuff.  Expect the bigger telecom companies and ISPs to bundle streaming services together in the future, while some of the also-ran services (namely anything that isn't established like Netflix or a loss-leader like Prime and Apple are for their products) go all in on ad-support/premium options.  Unfortunately, as much as I want some of the services to fold (coughParamountPluscough), studios operate on the "if you're not making all the money, you're losing too much money principle", so don't expect that unless they get desperate.  Still, Netflix continues to beat subscriber expectations, even with some really obnoxious decisions (password restrictions, really?!), so it's clear there's a desire for this.

As for Cartoon Network as it is, the brand has value.  The linear channel clearance is paid up for a few years, you might as well use it.  If the clearances were about to expire, this might be a different story.

Already seeing places like Amazon, Apple, and YouTube featuring some of these services as “channel add ons” where you can watch them all in the same place. The only difference is the price is the same as the standalone, but it does simplify things

The services resisted this because it involves revenue sharing but some eventually got on board because they realized people want simplicity

Amazon lets you add Paramount and Max and you watch it all in Prime Video. It all just goes to your Amazon account. Very simple

Cable companies let you add it on but it still invokes logging in to the services separately rather than it all being on your guide.

Disney will soon offer Hulu as a tab in plus

it’s happening slowly
