I know this must be a stupid idea, but I need someone to tell me why

"Hey I know you're addicted to crack, but just drink coffee instead. They're just stimulants."

They deliver nicotine differently, so if you're at the point of smoking already why hang around smoking's ugly sisters.

Fair enough at this, but the analogy comparing crack and coffee was asinine.  What makes cigarettes addicting is the nicotine. There is nicotine in nicotine gum and nicotine patches (obviously). There is no cocaine in coffee. Unless you want to mix some in yourself, I guess.

They're both stimulants though, so that coffee buzz has gotta be able to step up to that crack buzz somehow. They could just drink six pots a day or something.

It's also the oral fixation (LOL SUCKING DICK) that comes into play. Your brain develops muscle memory of the entire ritual of lighting up, inhaling, getting a nicotine fix, and then the dopamine release. Repeat and repeat. Nicotine patches are designed to slowly release nicotine throughout the day. Their main purpose is to stave off withdrawal symptoms, not replace the habit. Same with nicotine gum and lozenges. I guess there are some people who are addicted to receiving nicotine that way. Weirdos.

If you don't understand, good. Nicotine addiction is a bitch . . . and the pandemic made me go back into the habit again. Fortunately, I'm vaping instead, but who knows what heavy metals I'm inhaling with each drag.

This is exactly what I needed. I knew my idea was stupid.

I enjoy talking about things in ways people have difficulty understanding because reading the room is so difficult for me.

I mean, you did say they deliver nicotine differently, so you had a chance to save yourself, but you doubled down on the crack to caffeine analogy.

Oh well.

What kind of person does such a thing. It's just absurd. Who is like that?

Are you okay? I don't think I said anything absurd. Just responding to the context of this thread and your comments in this thread.

I really can't with the OP.

But the oral fixation thing is bullshit. It all the nicotine. Once I broke that habit, all oral fixations left unconsciously...I even stopped biting my fingernails as a nic fix and I had been doing that for 30 years.

Always just seemed like a smoker's excuse to smoke.

That said, I don't even smoke weed now that much, I'm all edibles and the 2 THC highs are completely different.

There's no need anyway, benji perfectly explained why it's dumb. Even taking away the oral fixation part.

Looks like Benji pinned it.

I did want to point out that, as much as the other compounds in cigarettes get attention, nicotine itself is toxic to the point that it could cause irreparable damage to your cardiovascular system in much the same way other drugs like cocaine or heroin can.  Toxicity relates to a compounds ability to create an unusual and unregulated physiological reaction, and the resulting narrowing of arteries and blood clotting certainly qualify.

Loose-leaf pipe tobacco smells pretty good, and on a whim I decided to look up making mead using it as an ingredient.

Yeah don't do that, nicotine will kill you dead.

I heard from somebody, don't even remember who are how long ago, but they started using nicotine patches and gum without ever smoking and were now pretty much addicted to them.

for me the addiction was 100% chemical.

and the only explanation i can offer is that i got really sick at one point and something in me said "fuck that shit" and i never looked back. no oral fixation, no habits that needed relaxing. it was all the chemical dependency. and 3 years later, it still triggers when i smell a freshly-lit cigarette.

Mine is hopping in a car. I delivered pizza for like seven years and it gets hectic, but efficient routes have room for a cig on the way back to the store usually. Drivers get calculating and we all love it because we get more business when we work efficiently. A pack and a half a day when a delivered at a place I worked only weekends but had a lot of outside stress. Now it's about 7 a day.

Really....I can't stand the smell of cig smoke...it doesn't make me want one...

But, I do get the craving when others go out to smoke...not like I want to smoke, but I wanna go outside, 😂

......I can go outside but then I have to inhale the smoke so I just go hide in the bathroom and huff the cleaners like a normal person.

To add more, when I'm completely off nicotine for a while, I can freely smoke cigars and hookah and chew nicotine gum. That's not enough to get me back into the habit. Just one cigarette, and even if I've become repulsed to the smell of smoke, was enough to get right back into smoking a pack a day. My body just suddenly craves nicotine after a single cigarette. It's the same with vaping, which is why it is such a viable alternative to traditional smoking.

So I really don't think it's just the chemical dependence. I've smoked hookah for hours on end, and I wasn't smoking cigarettes or craving nicotine again in the following weeks.

Here's another idea that might also be way too stupid to be viable:

Take up chewing a pen instead.

Yeah, that's also a pretty bad habit, but is it as bad as smoking/vaping?

See, you're totally aware of what's going on .  But this is some painfully wild shit to suggest.

Some people do chew on pens/pencils as some kind of habit. If part of the appeal of smoking is the oral fixation (as benji said), trading one dumb vice that will probably kill you for another dumb vice that.... I have no idea if it can kill you.

Well, if you're going to take Benji's assertion as gospel, then I leave you to your amazing miracle cures.

ok the car was a problem for me too, but only while i was still smoking. after i quit, it wasn't an issue.

Benji is not even close to the first person I heard the "oral fixation" explanation from.

Also these ideas I'm just spit balling and literally asking you guys to tell me I'm stupid.

Consider this, I have zero concern over how long I stay alive or how I die. I recognize life as a consistent gamble and I behave in the way that makes me feel like a good person. But I am what I am and the more people I meet the more I am.

I use icebreakers and try to deeply inhale the menthol. I've heard people using pens and straws.

Not really, I just disagree with you. Once the cravings subside, the nervous habit of utilizing your mouth out of habit subsides as well.

I submit anyone chewing a pen, still smokes.

Well, I agree that nicotine is the main reason, and that the need to have something in your mouth (a dick) subsides. When I am in a quitting phase, I go through many packs of icebreakers, but the need greatly decreases throughout a month to eventually barely needing them at all.
