I watched Douglas, the stand up special by Hannah Gadsby (currently on Netflix) and she has a bit about HP and the houses.

She said Gryffindor was the straight white cis-males of houses and Hermione was probably a TERF.  It was actually pretty amusing.

But it made me start thinking about it. I'm not really a HP fan (I might even mildly dislike it at this point) but I've read the books and seen the movies.  I could definitely imagine Hermione as a TERF but also potentially as a transfeminist/intersectional feminist.

What do you think?

Fuck, is she?  I had no idea and don't follow any JK Rowling or HP stuff.  I've just heard bits and pieces about her being problematic and alienating her fans.

Yup she came out on twitter last year

I just googled it and there was also a news article from fucking yesterday about more TERFy shit too.  Wow.  Fuck her.

https://www.advocate.com/media/2020/5/30/jk-rowling-misgenders-woman-references-terfs-accidental-tweet

She follows this professor from the UK Kathleen Stock who is like the #1 TERF in the UK. I used to fight w/Kathleen on twitter. Once I got Kathleen all pissed off bc I kept asking about lesbians and dildos and got her to tweet at me something like "NEITHER HER PARTNER NOR THE DYKE WHO WEARS A STRAP ON LIKES IT BECAUSE IT'S SHAPED LIKE A PENIS" then one of her colleagues chimed in and was like "Really now, Kathleen, surely this language is a new low even for you" it was so great

I tried to go back and find it just now but looks like she deleted a lot of her old tweets

I want to say no, simply because I like the Harry Potter books, but at the same time I could see it happening.  Hermione seemed to be the type who knows what's good for everyone with her elf liberation and trying to sneak clothes into the dishes and shit and free the elves that wanted to stay and work in Hogwarts without opening a dialogue with them to figure out what the elves themselves wanted, so it kinda makes since that on transgender issues she'd think she knew better than someone who was trans.

But also, in the wizarding world don't you think they could just reassign their genders by magic?  I mean they had people who could transform into animals, and with polyjuice potion they were able to transform into other people for a short time, so I would think that transgender issues wouldn't be a major deal in their world.

follow up question, is that an actual group or just the name coined for these types of people?

It's a name coined for them. They don't like it. They say it's a derogatory slur

See, that's kinda what I was thinking. Her at times misguided SPEW efforts made me feel like she'd def be terfy.

Their wizarding powers and potions would open up a lot of possiblities for transitioning, you would think. It would be awesome to just wave a wand and be able to change genders externally.

If JK Rowling is a TERF, then it's likely that transgender people simply wouldn't exist in Hermione's universe.

IF SHE DID encounter one, though, she probably actually wouldn't end up being a TERF. HP takes place in the 90s, if I'm not mistaken, and her very white parents were VERY accepting of her being a witch and going off to wizarding school. So I think her upbringing, coupled with the discrimination she faces at school herself, would lend her to a more open and accepting mindset than usual.
