Skiles Posted April 20, 2019 Posted April 20, 2019 In my experience, people who are recovering from addiction to drugs don't really bring it up, unless it's in a situation that's appropriate. But recovering alcoholics will find a way to spin it into any conversation. Guy: "Have you seen the latest episode of Breaking Bad?" Alkie: "No, I've fallen behind on that show since I've quit drinking." - - - Guy: "Hey, how much does this t-shirt cost?" Alkie: "That shirt is $8.98. Which, funnily enough, is exactly how much my brand of beer used to cost. But I've quit drinking, so maybe the price has changed." They bring it up a lot, is my point. 1 1

PhilosipherStoned Posted April 20, 2019 Posted April 20, 2019 (edited) He's kind of right. I'm not that kind of person, but due to my nature I've found out a lot of people that demonize pot, and alcohol do so especially when they are trying to abstain. As for me it doesn't really matter.. It sucks that a drug test might pick up the blunt that I smoked last week or the week before though that's honestly bullshit, but I don't mind saying no and rolling a bus sized blunt when I get the chance either. The laws regarding that make me want to slap rich politicians around, but that's not the way to make progress unfortunately. Edited April 20, 2019 by PhilosipherStoned

There are 3 possibilities here: 1) You don't have much experience. 2) You hang out with boors. 3) You're uncomfortable with your own drinking habits. Feel free to choose any or all. 1
bnmjy Posted April 20, 2019 Posted April 20, 2019 Staying dry was one of Packard's greatest achievements in life before he decided to show his white Irish pride on St Patty's by drinking himself to death. 1

nameraka Posted April 20, 2019 Posted April 20, 2019 idk. maybe it's because i'm not in recovery, but exactly one person in my life knows i'm an alcoholic. when i did manage to get sober for a bit, i didn't tell anyone because i didn't want them to know i was an alcoholic to begin with.
Phillies Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 My problem when dealing with these people are more of the fancy quotes and cliches that are said. "one day at a time" "keep on keeping on" "I am an alcoholic named _______ " "my best thinking got me here" "keep on coming back" There are alot more quotes and cliches but i can think of the good ones at the moment.

"We seek progress, not perfection." That's always been my favorite - it gives me an excuse to stop at doing minimally better instead of putting forth real effort.

That one isn't a fellowship-approved slogan, but it should be, gosh dang it.
Gyaos Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 (edited) I actually know people who do this shit. I think recovering alcoholics say it more than past drug users because alcohol is actually legal and more socially acceptable to an extent. Compare a previous alcoholic to someone who once stuck needles into themselves. It's all the same, certainly. But most people wouldn't recognize that... Edited April 21, 2019 by Gyaos
Guest BigotBingo Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 It's just kind of harder to work abyss-gazing into the conversation in general.
