Games you love that most people hate

What are some games that you really enjoy that are just hated by the majority of people? For me it's Spunky's Dangerous Day on SNES and to be honest with you I can understand the hate for this game. The game is nothing more than an escort and most people despise escort missions. I can imagine a kid who's a huge fan of Rocko's Modern Life being disappointed in a game like this because I know I would be. But despite all the negativity surrounding this game I found it to be really fun playthrough and is now one of my favorite licensed games on the Super Nintendo:D

The Senran Kagura games on the 3DS get alot of flack for being tiddie games with janky controls, but they were a ton of fun to play. The first one I enjoy particularly because, in spite of its framerate problems, it was a fun and basic side-scrolling beat-em-up with a surprisingly compelling storyline for each of the characters.

Enter the Matrix was sloppy, but I loved how immensely broken it got, especially when you put on cheats. I was hoping Path of Neo would have had a similar feeling because having unlimited health, ammo, and bullet-time felt like the ultimate Neo experience Finding a way to kill the agents with unlimited grenade launcher rounds was the highlight of my experience with the game.

I want to say Castlevania II, but I think the hatred for that game is mostly AVGN-driven history revision. *shrug*

Is RBI Baseball on the NES hated? That was a grand tradition with my brothers and I for a good while whenever they would come to visit. Good times.

I remember complaints about Castlevania II back then. I don't think it's a coincidence that Castlevania III ended up being more of a traditional side scroller like the first game.

Final Fantasy X-2

Honestly I think there are some good points about the game that people ignore. (Yuna's cock is not one of them)

X-2 is great. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Then again, I really liked Lightning Returns. Maybe I just like dressing up girls....

I don't 'most' people hate SMB2 or Zelda 2 but definitely those if they count.

Mega Man 7 is a good one I didn't think of. I'll also 8, although it's not hated as much.
And since we seem to be saying a lot of games with mixed opinions, I'll throw in Super Mario Sunshine.

SMB2 hate is history revision. I didn't know one single kid that didn't like it back in the day.

As for Mega Man 7, I didn't really like that game... I didn't really like Mega Man 4 or 5 either (never played 6).... but Mega Man 7 was released on the same system as, and later than, Mega Man X. Like, why did Mega Man 7 even need to exist?

Honestly I like Sunshine more than I like Mario 64

Super Double Dragon is another one I got to throw out there. I will admit that game an acquired taste.

Super Ghouls N' Ghosts, I know a lot of people love whine on how hard this game or say that it's unplayable but honestly I don't think it's as hard as people make it out to be.

Another is Aladdin on SNES and I say this because it always gets compared to the Genesis version. I always get the impression that people assume that the SNES version is a bad game compared to the Genesis version.

Did you actually beat Super Ghouls N Ghosts? I can't believe it. My brother, who is the bestest video gamer I've ever known, came damn close to beating it.... He played through the game twice like you're supposed to, but he never found whatever hidden item it is you're supposed to find during the second go-round.

I've beaten it several times. To get the Goddess bracelet you have to be complete maxed out on your power ups which includes the golden armor and the shield upgrade. Once you have all that you can find the bracelet as soon as the first level in the second playthrough but I'll tell you right now that weapon fucking sucks when especially when you have to use it to beat the final two bosses so it's best to try get towards the end of the game which would require you to do a no damage run.

the classic mega man series was great but definitely growing stale even before 7 was released. i mean they were getting released almost at a yearly basis. x series had the same problem, great series just starting to grow stale by x3. x4 was a nice redesign but x5 and x6 had a drop in quality as well. x6 especially was rushed and was done behind inafune's back. x7 was complete garbage. and x8 was decent.

sunshine was definitely a mixed reception at the time of release. same with wind waker, which was hated by many gamers just because of the graphics.

but smb2 and zelda 2 gotta be stretches right?

i mean im having trouble thinking of anyone i knew personally that hated either of those titles.

i always assumed the snes version was bad until i recently played it semi recently. and yeah it got a bunch of unwarranted hate. it's nothing amazing but whats there is a solid platformer.

Ugh, hate that game. lol

Aladdin SNES is good, I like it a lot better than the Genesis version but it's also the one I grew up with.

I know some but it feels more like the minority to me than majority.

i guess i could see some fans being disappointed by how much different both those sequels ended up being from their originals. but im not aware of any mass hate towards both titles.

another title i just thought of is majoras mask. it was really hated among the fan base just because of its 3 day cycle. even though its gained a bigger cult following today i still feel lots of people hate it today.

The Simon's Quest reasoning is why I was almost going to put FFVIII. I really enjoyed VIII even if the combat and story were a little wonky, but the Spoony videos definitely shaped it to be one of the most hated FF games for a while until people soured on XIII.

The last AvP game got terrible reviews*, and i mean it wasn't the greatest but it was still pretty good.

They need to make another one though.

*scratch that, looks like history has been kind to it- pretty much just the early reviews were bad.

avp 3? the one that came out in 2010?

that game was rightfully grilled back then.

That's the one.

Looks like its at 90% on steam and 65% on metacritic/gamefaqs

They really need to make a new one.

In fact I was just searching and found a thread on the official gamespot forums about wanting a new one.

it was 6 years old though.

:(

dont get me wrong i can see the game being better than it is by adding a few fixes. like shortening up the scripted kills, or removing of the boss characters. and also adding less repetitive gameplay. because the parts that work good are actually fun to play. i love being the predator clocking around and using all the cool gadgets to kill people with. that shit was awesome.

but that 90% score seems way too high. maybe it got a few patches to make the game better since then?

Not that I'm aware of.

I think it's more a case of "the only people buying/rating it on steam are the people who really like it."

But yeah, ton of things wrong with it, but still fun and NEEDS A SEQUEL.

i would also love to see a properly well made sequel. they could really make it a great game if they put in the effort.

Zelda II: When the game was brand new, I don't remember many kids hating it. But when I was a little older in the 90s I knew plenty of kids who hated it, and this hate definitely pre-dated the ubiquity of the Internet.

SMB2: This game was always super popular until it was revealed that it wasn't the "real" Super Mario 2, and then gradually it got more Internet hate later on because of this. Ironically, I see virtually no one say how great a game the REAL Super Mario 2 / Lost Levels is.

Doom on SNES: Is this a thing???? I thought the earliest Nintendo console doom game was Doom 64.

Majora's Mask: I HATE that game, yes, because of the 3-day thing. I didn't know it was roundly hated though. I never saw a whole lot of discussion about it, and what little I did see was mostly positive.

Wind Waker: Everyone and their mother hated the game BEFORE IT WAS EVEN RELEASED solely because of the graphics. But I thought once it was actually released and people actually played it the public decided it was actually a good game after all. I stopped playing new games by the time of its release, so I've never played it.

doom was even ported to the gba! there was something like 9 or 10 official ports. snes version of the game is a good game but it was almost a miracle to even get doom running on the system. lots of compromises and concessions were made. doom 64 is a completely different game. that game was great on its own.

the wind waker was good. i still prefer both oot and majoras over it, but it stands solid on its own. if youre a fan of the series i recommend you play it. as for the hate on majoras, you just gotta trust me there is a good size group that hate on it. though it was very well received among the gaming press at the time of release.

i guess i just havent come across the hate for either of those 2 nes games. never played the real smb2 but if i remember correctly, it was a standard sequel in the smb1 style just much harder. so it probably didnt do enough to stand out on its own to warrant the love all the other mario titles get.

Wasn't Doom 64 itself really hated?

I really have no interest in video games anymore (other than discussing and listening to the soundtracks to the favorites of my youth), but if I ever do get back into gaming probably the first things I'm going to concentrate on are catching up on the Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Metroid series(es?).

I understand why Lost Levels doesn't get recognized, it's just weird to me how the popularity of SMB2 has been completely retconned despite that.

thats gonna be a lot of catching up with just those series of games but will be worth it.

i dont think doom 64 was hated. it received positive reviews at the time of release. the problem was that golden eye was also on the console and was such a big hit, doom by comparison was seen as the lesser title. doom 64 not only stood out as a fps shooter on a system that had a lot of great games in the genre, doom 64 stood out as its own doom title. i doubt anyone that played the game and is a fan of fps hated the game.
