Sandy's Fall 2018 Anime Watchlist/Reviews

I'll update this as I get around to watching more stuff.

Thus far I have been watching (from this season):

Golden Kamuy Season 2 - Highly recommend this series in general, the first season came out earlier this year. If you like animes with strange or unique plot points this will likely be up your alley.

Goblin Slayer - Intense and dark themed anime. A lot of people are comparing this to Berserk and supposedly the manga is more intense than the first episode that is out. Warning: If you have a hard time watching anything with sexual violence or rape you probably will want to skip this. Keep in mind this anime doesn't have a pointless depiction of sexual violence and isn't intended to glorify it, rather it is there to disgust the viewer and illustrate the existential evil and horror of the world it takes place in.

Radiant - Good anime thus far (only one episode), it has a very generic start from what I can tell but I see potential in certain elements the world building looks like it could easily go to unique places as apparently, the world consists of floating sky islands. I like the attitude and design of the main character's mentor, the art was pretty good I thought and the character designs were stylized well. All of the important characters thus far have stood out in a unique way. Not seen enough of the MC to decide whether or not he is a decently constructed protagonist yet or not.

Lotttta big name stuff this season.

Index 3 episode one was pretty good. Very hard to remember the plot though to be honest. Too many years have gone by.

Fairytail final season...  the usual Fairytail antics in episode 1.

Goblin Slayer seems good.

Zombieland Saga's first episode was insane.

That Time I got reincarnated as a Slime.... interesting but very slow first two episodes. I assume this turns into standard Isekai OP MC harem trash later.

SAO 3..... feels very different from previous SAO seasons and the animation and artwork are top notch.

Tokyo Ghoul 4... yeah just kidding i'm not watching that.

Really you thought so? All I saw was generic JRPG tropes with rape and gore thrown in for 'shock value'.

I'm not offended by it btw, could care less. Just thought it was boring.

I say it's not pointless because it's not there just for shock value alone. It is there to illustrate the coming story about the protagonist (the goblin slayer) and why he hates them as a nemesis. It is there to disgust the reader as a purpose of the plot.

Let me just say this, the purpose behind the sexual violence is meant to demonize those perpetrating it. It is the same reason it is present in Hellsing and Berserk.

That is the worst way to put sexual violence in a story and why it comes off as boring in that context. Hellsing isn't a great example because everything being about shock value made me roll my eyes at least for a third of it. I'm giving Berserk a shot later mainly because of its artwork and the storyline seems interesting enough to make it worth skimming past the rape scenes.

To each their own, I happen to really love Hellsing as a horror occult themed anime. I disagree about it being a useless plot element. I would agree if it was the soul plot element to emphasize such a disdain but from what I've seen so far it is not.

It's important to note that Hellsing and Berserk depict male rape only, e.g. males are the victims. If you don't like seeing anything with sexual violence I highly suggest figuring out which chapters have it before you start reading. The rapes in Berserk, in particular, are imo far more graphic than what I've seen in Goblin Slayer thus far.

For some it does not matter the purpose for such content, to me it does. I am not a fan of harem animes or anything in which characters are being unrealistically fawned at and having their clothes ripped off - because I find it to be completely pointless. Showing tragedy is not pointless to a story though as long as it's not overused. If the entire show becomes nothing but gratuitous rape scenes then I will probably be in agreement with you. Nevertheless, this subject is particularly difficult to watch and I would strongly warn anyone thinking about watching this if you can not handle the subject matter at all you should skip this show.

What the hell are you talking about?  Have you seen either of these?  Caska gets raped in Berserk every time she turns around (most notably during the Eclipse), and she's not the only woman who does.  Hellsing had women getting raped, including one after she was dead.

Is Goblin Slayer really that good? I saw the cover art and watched like 2 seconds and figured it was just another dumb mmo anime, but I loveee Berserk. Think I'll take another gander at it

It's more tabletop RPG than MMO. The comparison to Berserk is a bad one, and everyone who does it should feel bad.

It's basically just every tabletop trope designed to be as generic as possible with the occasional graphic violence for the sake of shock value.

It's pretty dumb.

Yeah, Goblin Slayer takes more inspiration from D&D and tabletop games. People compare it with Berserk because the action scenes are gory and there are rape goblins straight out of a doujin, but the edgier moments are regulated to just the dungeon crawling scenes.

It ends up being far more lighthearted and mellow when they’re back in town. For me, it was a pleasant surprise because it ended up not being too bogged down by the edge and focused on how other people react to the main character being well-known for his dedication to solely hunting down one of the weakest monsters in their universe. Where it feels much more like an RPG because of the hierarchy between goblins and other more/less threatening monsters, yet also makes a threat out of fodder enemies with how much more is at stake if an adventurer is unprepared or ill equipped.

People expecting another Berserk or for the violence and rape to be more than just window dressing for an RPG fantasy anime might be disappointed, but the edge and it’s dedication to paying homage to the RPG inspired aspects make it a nice watch to pass the time.

I also agree that Zombieland Saga is a must-see this season

Looks like I'll be taking a look at both of those animes

That post is even more ridiculous because the Eclipse is the most infamous moment in the series.  Even people who are not familiar with Berserk know about it.

I got so annoyed when watching a top 10 steamy sex scenes list on youtube(Yes, I will click most things with a yaoi thumbnail) when that major Berserk rape scene showed up. Then people were like me in the comments going, "Hey that's not sex, that's just rape." Then others responded by saying that she was clearly enjoying it which made the scene steamy, and I remembered why I don't read the fucking comments.
