how about y2k and 2012 thing

in all seriousness ghost, and this is my own thought, but mankind has lived a tangled life with superstition, and not understanding the world they live in.

people are so nervous about their own mortality, that instead of living in the here and now, they are consumed of 'the end'

religion hampering on 'being damned' for being human, with human instincts.

i see it as people being so narcissistic that they can't imagine a world without them in it, so rather then accept their own death as a possibility, the end of the world is a far more plausible concept

Because, on a personal basis, it is.  In the US, the average lifespan for a woman is 81.6 years and 76.9 years for men.  In the grand scheme of things, that's not very long.
