We are going to implement custom ranks as a donation incentive like I have been mentioning doing it for several months now. I will make an announcement thread later when I am at my computer. But basically custom ranks will be rewarded for donations, on an $X for Y months basis, or as a prize in contests. People who have already donated will be entitled to cash in and people who already have customs right now will get another three months no-questions-asked (though I have to go back in and restore some people obviously). Given that it is a reward for donating actual human dollars for keeping the lights on for all of us, I'm in a bit of a bind where I can't in fairness grandfather in certain folks in perpetuity or give special treatment. I should not be penalized because of a misconception that I got something for doing absolutely nothing. And if I appear to be favoring certain users over others, that'd be great for me to know. But that is different than users getting a cosmetic perk (ie. rank color of their choice) for a year for donating $20 or whatever, in that the rank confers no extra benefits other color. In fact, I think it would show preferential treatment if we let the half-dozen users who received custom colors on the previous iteration just for funsies keep them forever while at the same time only awarding the cosmetic perk to everyone else as a thank you for donating. Hosting the site costs money and we can't keep paying out of pocket. So we're looking for fun ways to incentivize donations (while we come up with other avenues of making the site self-sufficient) without penalizing people who don't or can't donate. Once a member reaches a certain threshold of donations, the custom rank can be permanent. I assume it would be impossible to get paypal to talk to the forum software enough to keep an auto-updating running total on our profiles, but maybe every time someone donates, they receive a PM that states something like "You have just made a donation of x dollars, which gives you three months of a custom rank. Your running total of donations is y dollars. You have z dollars more to go to receive a permanent custom rank." The basic idea I was going to announce was to do something like $20 for a year/$10 for 6 months/$5 for 3 months/$2 for a month. I do like that idea of a max donation unlock making it permanent, if we still go that route. The plan is to come up with additional incentives down the road too once we have some sort of system in place. It's all a bit tricky once you try to incorporate actual dollar values into the mix, you have to make the values fair and it's a very touchy subject. Poof Posted April 23, 2018 Share Posted April 23, 2018 lets do it by political affiliation republicans have to pay for their own damn rank if they want it democrats are all entered into a donation pool which is divided evenly and you get your rank for a time equivalent to your share. if you are a democrat, and you want to opt out of the pool, you can do so, but your rank costs triple. if they dont donate at all, theyre banned for one month. this will never be enforced, but it's still technically a rule. libertarians/anarcho-capitalists since they dont believe in business regulation charge each of them however much you think you can get out of them. charge them 20x as much if you think theyll pay it. socialists/communists same as democrats but they arent allowed to opt out of the donation pool by paying more. anarchists/nihilists can donate if they want but you dont have to actually follow thru and give them a rank in return if you dont want to green party can buy a rank at standard price but they also have to buy a carbon offset credit for the server's electricity use. moderates/independents/undecided-voters can pick any of the above systems but theyre stuck w/that choice for a predetermined "term limit" 1 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We asked for donations, and got some, and they kept us running for a bit. But then people mostly stopped donating. I did everything I could to streamline how things run to move us to cheaper hardware. But only one person has donated in the last 2 months and it was $10. It currently costs $80 (and some tax) to run this place per month. So if you guys don't want to donate, and don't want popup ads about Russian chicks in your area looking for dick on every page, we gotta find some way to get you to pay for the site to... exist. (We don't have nearly enough users for normal unobtrusive ads to make us any money) Therefore, we ask you to pay for stuff you want. So paying for custom ranks is currently the plan.
