The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board

It's complicated but Olympusat actually ran the channel, and ran it really poorly so I think Funimation's idea was to tell them to F off, and then launch their own channel  that they actually had control of.

But they forgot the part where they actually launch a new channel.

So in other words, repeal and replace, but missing the "replace". Gee, where have we seen that before?

I hope Olympushit is actually happy with Toku.

So you're saying every year is 2007? ::HMM::

I kinda wish every year WAS 2007--anime would still be on [as] weeknights and I'd be getting laid every spring!

But the pain of losing her over and over again every summer would be rough, and I'd never know how InuYasha, FMA,  and Hellsing ended, so I guess this is OK.

Especially in 2007 they were finally starting to rotate newer things onto weeknights that weren't even done airing on Saturdays like Eureka Seven, Bleach and Blood +. For the longest time in 2005/2006 they were doing endless reruns of Inuyasha, FMA, and GiTs. Those were always the standbys .Although I'd rather have that what we get now.  I used to even stay up for Gigantor, Astro Boy, and Voltron at 5:30 AM!

Hey they also show Yosuga no Sora, where a guy ends up banging his twin sister.

It's not quite as classy as funimation stuff. Also.... almost none of the anime they show was popular enough to get an English Dub, it's pure bottom of the barrel.

So uh...I see some news got dropped.

Based off the ratings we've seen so far this year, my guess for the new line-up on the 25th is:

11:00 - Samurai Jack

11:30 - Dragon Ball Super

12:00 - Dragon Ball Z Kai

12:30 - Tokyo Ghoul

01:00 - Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

01:30 - Hunter x Hunter

02:00 - Gundam Unicorn

02:30 - Naruto Shippuden

03:00 - Ghost in the Shell

Makes sense to put the new show behind DBZ Kai. I also wouldn't be surprised if they sandwiched Tokyo Ghoul between the DB shows.

Swapping HxH and Unicorn is the only real mix-up that I believe has a real shot of happening.

I would like that line-up.  Naruto even further into the night is good for me. :P

You really think Tokyo Ghoul is still a big enough deal to air in the second hour?

IF I had to arrange the shows, here's how I would do it, and why:

11 PM - Samurai Jack, cuz CN Studios World Premiere. DUH. Later replace with AOT S2 if that's coming.

11:30 PM - Dragonball Super - Dub near-premiere of 2015 show

12 AM - DBZ Kai - Dub premiere of 2014 show (albeit one that uses ancient animation)

12:30 AM - Hunter x Hunter - Dub premiere of 2012 show, and it's entering what is widely regarded as one of its best arcs, so it could use a boost. Plus always seems to retain well and I'd love to see what it could do with a prime timeslot like this.

1 AM - Tokyo Ghoul - The new kid on the block but it's not a dub premiere.

1:30 AM - Gundam Unicorn - Needs to hang on to a decent slot for IBO S2; will have 11 episodes left once Ghoul arrives. Will end the same week as episode 11 of Ghoul, but then maybe swap with it before Sqrt(A) hits?

2 AM - JoJo - Only 5 episodes left and it retains DBZ Kai poorly so it can take the shaft. That doesn't mean it might not get new life at some point with Stardust Crusaders, but not right away. In fact, I daresay Shippuden might rebound to 2 AM after Jojo, either bringing in a 2nd rerun (like FLCL) or contract Toonami to 11-3.

2:30 - Shippuden - Pain Arc don't care. After that it's crap.

3 AM - GITS because rerun!

However, that being said, here's what I think [as] will actually do: Jack; Super; Kai; Ghoul; JoJo; Hunter; Gundam; Shippuden; GITS.

What's the point of getting a new show if you bury it at the bottom of the block? I assume it will run right after Kai.

I'd agree with this.  The first three slots are obviously locked down, and we know how much Toonami doesn't like to change the schedule.  It makes the most sense to just push JoJo and everything down and put Tokyo Ghoul right after DBZ Kai.

Here is a blog post by a user named TheRealDonEast (he's an active live-tweeter during the block and his tweets have been featured on the Toonami Faithful Podcast) which has for the first time made me really understand why the ratings for Toonami haven't been as good on average as they have a year or so ago.  Basically, the shows they air just aren't as interesting or aren't as gripping and exciting.  While I currently love 2/3 of what the block has right now, I realize I am an optimist who just wants to have a good time with anime and to converse with people online about it, whereas others see the shows for the quality they are.

Interestingly enough, this is the first lineup they've had where I dig almost every show they have on (sans Shippuden).

Unicorn's probably my favorite on the block, which from the look of things happens to be a minority opinion as Americans historically have never really latched on to Universal Century titles (common complaints that they're played too straight / political / etc.). It's been doing better in the ratings the past couple weeks though, so idk.

Well it's like I keep saying... the current Toonami block just isn't very good. I like Kai and Jojo but Kai is basically a rerun of stuff I saw 20 years ago, and I can see why Jojo doesn't have huge mainstream appeal, it's more of a diehard anime fan anime. Jack is a nice step in the right direction though.

But from what I've seen of the two Gundam's so far... they're boring. Most people seem to consider Naruto  trash and I've never bothered giving it a chance honestly. I was never into OP. Super is a shameless cash grab.  HxH is boring.  GITS SAC seems to be considered the worst of the series. Tokyo Ghoul starts strong but quickly turns into a long boring, awful slog.

So yeah, I can why he'd say the block isn't gripping or exciting.

Oh, I've heard of that one.  I've seen some choice images of a certain scene at the end of one of the episodes.  If that's the kind of shit Toku plays than thank God I don't get it.

Yeah and they marathon it so you would tune in and it would already be on one of the last episodes.... and you'd just be like....

what is this... a slice of life anime? Oh this looks cute I guess. Wait is that his sister? His real sister? Wait what are they doing? OH GOD NO.

And to make it worse they show everything almost like it's Hentai.

So yeah they have a lovely assortment of Incest, Lesbian, and Gay slave bondage anime. Try Toku today!

yeah back when they'd get crap like soul eater that was when things were cool

but when the block got chopped down  the selection of good shows and seeing as adultswim has big expectations for the ratings any show that starts to dip could be in danger as we saw in one piece's case

for a late night anime block for anime fans it's sure not as exciting as it used to be

Right now it's more the people I talk with online that enables me to enjoy watching the block. The times where I actually love a show they air hasn't been as frequent because they haven't aired a show I loved from hearing about it before.  I had to acclimate myself to HxH to enjoy it right now more than when they had the exams, because for some reason, the pacing in those exams were sloooooooow and kind of boring. It feels like a real story is finally kicking into gear now that they're hunters and they can go out into the real, gritty, cruel world to achieve a goal.  Same with DB Super, although I have a feeling that will fall right into the usual bland fights and repetitive story arcs very quickly.

On top of this, it makes the most sense to put it in the slot where it's most likely to succeed, even if it's only for a month or so. They most likely already had JoJo's replacement picked out and Tokyo Ghoul was expedited due to the whole One Piece contract situation.

For example, if Mob Psycho 100 is replacing JoJo, then they'll either keep TG at 12:30 and air it at 1, or air it at 12:30 and move TG to 1:00 (which means the people that were watching it after Kai can choose to stick around longer and keep following it). There are benefits to doing it either way, so it really just depends on which show AS thinks can reach a larger audience (aka which show they think that retain DB's audience better)

Mob Psycho would be a strange choice to replace JoJo since it's a FUNIMATION broadcast dub, but it also would probably do decent.

I do hope Toonami isn't done with JoJo though, either. Would love to see Stardust Crusaders air someday, even if the Roundabout season has done pretty lackluster.

Hey Alchemist, I was wondering; do you happen to know if Toonami was doing better overall when they were regularly rotating in different shows instead of focusing on longer-running shounens for the majority of the block?

It just seems like they did better when they had a wider range of different, shorter shows.

Not really. It's been kind of a mixed bag. The best year was 2015, which featured 3 long-runners, 3 shorter premieres, and a rerun for the last 11 months. As more like Hunter x Hunter and JoJo showed up the ratings began to decline, even if JoJo is not actually treated as a long-runner but a serial.

It's not impossible because the dub is already complete (I think).  However, it's only 12 episodes long, so they better dang well have another show lined up in 12 weeks after that.  I would LOVE hearing Kurbipher ham it up on cable TV! :D

So, if you're looking for the numbers for the new Samurai Jack episode... well, you might be waiting a bit longer than usual. Apparently, there was a power outage at the place where they collect the data, and they need time to fire it up before they can actually get the hard numbers. The numbers for Saturday and Sunday on the networks haven't come in yet, so I assume the cable ratings won't come in until after those are done.

How awkward is it happens now of all weeks? Either way, I'm sure you'll live.

You can say "fuck" on this board. It's totally understandable.

I just happen to find "clusterfudge" funnier!

But the clusterfuck is indeed coming to an end, at least as far as we're concerned:

UPDATE #4: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/wednesday-5-11-2016-fast-nationals-delayed.html

We shall know how well Samurai Jack did at about 10 AM tomorrow morning!
