  1. Not to put words in his mouth, but I believe he's referring to his sister-in-law who is being ableist as holding him to an unreasonable standard. Like you said, we're not the people to be giving advice because we don't know what she's saying, why she's saying it, and why he's being passed over for promotions. He certainly could be experiencing prejudice in some form - it's just not our place to be deciding that or tell him what he needs to do.
  2. You don't have to be doing aerobatics or aggressive flight maneuvers to experience g-force loss-of-conciousness. There are instances where auto-pilot has over corrected, causing the plane to pitch up or down at extreme angles.
  3. Are you seriously asking why someone would ride the town bike into the local ravine just to see what you could make it do?
  4. I like the new "moderates vote with the liberal commies" plot twist though.
  5. You may want to rephrase that sentence, but I get it now.
  6. Having high standards for yourself is great, but expecting others to not fuck up is indicative of your own need to have others validate you. It’s also a validation of your sister-in-law’s abusive behavior: you’re saying neurotypical people deserve to be marginalized by not being perfect.
  7. You can't "convince" anyone you're worthy of a promotion. All you can do is be good at your job and demand respect for the work you do, as in exhibit pride in your work and own mistakes (rather than apologize for them). Promotions, even at the lowest rungs, are arbitrary - being competent is a must in any worthwhile business, but it's not a guarantee you'll get elevated.
  8. To give meaning, no matter how superficial, to the work you put in. You crave acknowledgment from the people you expend effort on.
  9. In that case, not sure what he can channel his money into. Assuming he doesn't have his own instrument and he's not playing anything particularly large (like a tuba, or a bass drum), it might be a good idea to suggest he save up to purchase his own. If he's keen on it, a lot of decent used "student" instruments can be purchases in the $2-300 range.
  10. Interesting. I don't recall bring up his name in any of my recent posts completely unprompted. Apparently I don't miss him nearly as much as you miss Fuggs.
  11. Is that why you got a third job? So you can overpay for a sad booty call?
  12. Does he enjoy doing either?
  13. I wasn’t suggesting they were the same, just that the job doesn’t impart any more sense of what things are worth on its own. It would be interesting to know what his extracurricular activities are. Spending money on a freemium game suggests that he’s not particularly invested in any of those activities.
  14. Oregon State is looking decent. Haven’t had a chance to see Wazzu yet.
  15. Both teams looked terrible, so it was hard to see either winning that game.
  16. I’d like to point out he has “a job” of sorts in the sense he’s getting money for chores. So, while getting an actual job is certainly better than paying him to do stuff he should be doing anyway, it doesn’t really change the dynamic. What seems to be missing is any obligation. If he had a job, he’d have to pay for a bus pass to get to work or he’d need to buy work clothes. Most kids don’t get jobs because they like working, they get jobs to support a livelihood, like athletics, music, an extracurricular hobby, or (god forbid) putting food on the table. It looks like he doesn’t have any actual purpose for that money other than that shitty phone game and nothing he needs to buy to support his phone game habit. So, getting a job will help, but what you really need to do is give him a hobby or activity to support. I would start with whatever after school programs you have that are centered on arts or craftsmanship.
  17. Did not expect the Alabama at Central Florida game to be that bad.
  18. Wanted to put a coda on this…. From the Los Angeles Times…
  19. I get what ghosty is doing. When you’re fighting anxiety, you start worrying about stupid shit like this sometimes. I was like this when I was a teenager.
  20. That isn’t one of them.
  21. I’ll bet he did show…. In a “shitter’s full” from behind his RV in Pat’s driveway kind of way.
  22. I would disagree with that. Like any board game, there is considerable talent that goes into creating clues for trivia question because you're not "just" rewording the prompt. Jeopardy can certainly continue with old clue prompts for a short period of time, but it's not ideal.
  23. New Zealand claims to have succeeded, but it's far easier to quarantine a small / medium-sized archipelago nation than a continent.
  24. Yeah, they've been here forever. I wouldn't doubt they've been in the north since when the Conquistadores were raping the new world. Meanwhile, it appears fire ants were first reported in China in '04, so they've been infesting China for almost two decades now around the peak of China's rapid economic expansion. Supposedly they've spread to 11 provinces.
  25. The Michael Keaton ghost character. He was creeping on Lydia (Wynona Ryder) who is a teenager, but it's not sexual per se. He's basically using Lydia as a conduit to wreak havoc on the mortal world.
