Elizabeth was born the heir to the throne and is the actual sovereign (what's known as a queen regnent), so she holds the title of queen. Philip married into the royal family and was Elizabeth's consort, so he was granted the title of prince. The husbands of reigning queens generally aren't given the title of king, presumably to avoid confusion over who's the reigning monarch. On the flipside, a woman married to a king generally gets granted the title of queen because everyone will assume her husband is the reigning monarch. It's not equal treatment, but these aren't exactly progressive institutions. And while Philip was part of one or two other European royal houses, he was never next in line to any other throne, and he had to relinquish those other titles when he married Elizabeth.

I miss the Ani-Monday block. It was this wonderful mix of legit fantastic shows and some of the absolute worst OVAs ever drawn by human hands. -

This has nothing to do with Demarco. The first season was an absolute masterpiece, and getting the second season was a no-brainer. It just so happened to be one of the most spectacular production fuck-ups in anime history. The deal was probably already worked out before the nosedive happened. -

Trunks Thread 19.1: A New New Frontier
Top Gun replied to PokeNirvash's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I mean if you need someone to tag in, I'm desperately avoiding trying to do something constructive. I'm not really up for breaking down single episodes anymore but I can throw together some general reactions. I've always enjoyed Attack on Titan, but a lot of that was because of the sheer spectacle of it, of seeing just how desperate things could get and how the protagonists could just barely claw their way out of it. But this final season has been an absolute revelation. I can't think of another series I've watched that's managed to turn the narrative on its head quite like this, creating genuine sympathy for the mass-murdering antagonists while sending the main protagonist down a path of self-destruction. Certainly nothing else in this demographic. It's by far my most compelling watch every week, and I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see just how far into darkness we're going to descend. I'd say Food Wars is my ultimate guilty pleasure, but let's face it I feel absolutely no shame about it. I love how committed it is to its bit, how hard it goes over-the-top while playing everything completely straight-faced. If you're going to make an anime version of Iron Chef with all-but-literal food porn, this is the only way to do it. Moments like the end of that last episode with everyone in awe over that batshit-crazy food reveal are what I live for. Fire Force is a series that hooked me early on, absolutely cratered partway into the first season, but then pulled things back together by the end. This second season has been a marked improvement overall. The stakes are higher, we're getting all sorts of fun lore, and our band of lovable idiots are getting into all sorts of shenanigans. (Arthur is love, Arthur is life.) The last few episodes felt kind of...off, but I have high hopes going forward. But seriously, no more psychos popping out of kids' mouths, please. It's bad enough that we had to go through some monkey's-paw bullshit ending a terrible show while being subjected to Black Clover's return, but to add insult to injury we're forced to endure some of the most banal inconsequential filler episodes I've ever had to sit through, focused on characters I do not give a single shit about. It's so bad that even though this currently-starting storyline was almost certainly not in the manga, I'm so desperate for anything resembling a plot that it almost seems like a relief. While Titan has been my most compelling watch, I think I'd have to call Gridman my favorite thing on the block right now. I figured I'd probably like it from what little I knew about it, but it has been a sheer delight so far. The cast is colorful and well-developed, there are gobs of Eva undertones everywhere, the fight scenes kick ass, and my inner 6-year-old wants to buy the shit out of a combining Gridman toy. I love the hell out of how Trigger has managed to capture the motions of monsters originally played by guys running around in derpy rubber suits. Can't wait to see how this wild ride wraps up. Shippuden is, well, Shippuden. What frustrates me the most about this series is that it's capable of hitting some genuine highs every once in a long while. Naruto finally breaking through to Kurama and making a genuine connection? That was legitimately awesome stuff, complete with flashy animation and a bitchin' soundtrack. But immediately afterwards the show craps the bed with episodes full of flashback and padding (let's note that it only just returned from filler, what the hell), and then oh hey it's everyone's favorite little emo shit to utterly kill the mood. We're in the "final battle" and there's still a third of the series left...lord give me strength. Rewatching Demon Slayer, it's amazing that I can pinpoint the exact moment when my enthusiasm for the series waned: Zenitsu's true introduction, groveling and crying at the feet of some poor woman like the sniveling pussy-ass bitch he is. It's a rare show that has one single character bring down the entire experience so profoundly, but the only redeeming moment the little shit has had so far was getting the crap kicked out of him to protect Nezuko, and then he swiftly squandered that goodwill by creeping on her like a total perv. Who writes a character like that and thinks it's a good idea? What sucks is that the series has so many great moments, like that episode 19 fight scene, but you just know that he's going to pull his shtick somewhere down the line and bring you down again. Lessee, what finished recently... Every time I thought that Waifu Simulator 2020 couldn't possibly get any dumber, I wound up eating my words, because dear sweet jebus did it keep plumbing new lows. What gets me the most is that it seemed hell-bent on repeatedly trying to garner sympathy for the sociopath who murdered thousands for literally no reason at all. He can rot in hell right alongside Kawahara's sick rape fetish. Fuck this franchise so hard. The only saving grace is that it looks like we won't have to deal with any more of it for a good while. AssClass was a total blast. Koro-sensei is the goddamn best. I hope we get that second season sooner than later. -

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the review on ANN seemed to suggest the opposite, that it honestly isn't anything special as a stand-alone film. -

I feel like I should say Titan, because it's absolutely the most compelling thing on the block right now, and I am absolutely loving the direction the series has taken. It's fantastic stuff. But that was a given. The biggest pleasant surprise has been Gridman. I knew just the basics about it and thought it sounded interesting, but I've been blown away with how goddamn fun it is. Trigger doing their take on animating classic tokusatsu fights is a treat, and the inner 6-year-old in me wants to buy the shit out of a giant Gridman toy that hooks up with all of the other forms. -
Fire force and it's lack of merchandise
Top Gun replied to CountFrylock's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Dude...Soul Eater the manga ended in 2013. Soul Eater the anime stopped airing in 2009. In what universe do series that aren't either perennial mega-hits or getting some sort of revival continue to get a ton of new merchandise? Soul Eater was a successful shounen franchise that sold almost 20 million volumes but hit its peak popularity almost a decade ago. What you're seeing is completely in line with that. And oh yes, Fire Force, the series which has sold over 12 million volumes as of last October and has spawned two seasons and counting of a well-regarded anime adaptation, "didn't do well at all." Uh-huh. -

But, like...there's already a whole thread for that episode. One which you already posted this same thing in. And there's a lovely little "new posts" indicator that shows people, hey, maybe there's some new stuff here. Safe bet that everyone who cared would have seen it there just fine. -

Top Gun replied to CountFrylock's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Funko Pops weren't a thing until 2011, when Soul Eater was closed to finishing its manga run, and the anime was a few years done by then. There sure as hell weren't anime Funko figures back then. Why are you so surprised that an over decade-old shounen that wasn't a behemoth like DBZ or Naruto doesn't have much in the way of modern merch? And now you're just throwing in ridiculous caveats with Fire Force. "Well yes, it has a bunch of merch, but it's not merch I'd want so it doesn't count!" It's still officially-licensed merchandise, and there's a bunch of it. Quit moving the goalposts. -
