Geoffrey Hinton quits Google to... "warn public of the danger of A.I."?
Lasty replied to Lasty's topic in Current Events
I think it's also that A.I. has the power to render the idea of money obsolete, so rich people keep coming up with ways to make it look bad. This is where we get propaganda pieces like Terminator, i-robot, etc. that all personify A.I. in a way that is not remotely accurate. If you smash a laptop in front of 50 other laptops, none of them are going to care. The software that manages the power grid now is not even really A.I.. It predicts where electricity will be needed based on previous trends and distributes power accordingly. The same software could be used to govern the distribution of every other type of resource, so that everyone's everything is always on, just like the lights. (sustainably, too.you can seriously just program in additional protocols to the software) When your power goes out, it's because of a hardware failure, like a tree fell on the line, or because you did not play monopoly well enough. Never because those computers decided they didn't like you. The simple fact is, we cannot solve our problems without the aid of A.I., it's too much for people to parse out. -

Except not if we're not using money. Rich and poor would become anachronisms. Hard to make a gap bigger with the thing that eliminated the gap in the first place? >_O lol -
Incidental walking speed constructive interference in the city

It's nothing against how fast people walk. Sometimes, the person in front of you, happening to walk at the same speed an on a similar course, think you're following them and dip into a store. I actually used accurate nerd-speak to describe this, so I'm sorry for the confusion.... -
Current infrequent. It's not my thing, usually, but it can be fun on occasion. Mead is just fantastic.

The ability to lie to people =/= perpetual motion machine made out of... society. The entropy of a system wouldn't disappear even if you could perfectly lie to everyone; physics remembers what you did even if people don't. entropy.svg

I feel you. It strikes a nerve because your employer, and ultimately society at large, has taken too much from you. This is an appropriate reason to lose your shit and I take exactly zero offense.

The jig is up. This applies to people and society at large, not just engines.... Certain practices have outlived their ability to extract energy from the environment.

When you get stuck walking behind someone, & they're walking at the same speed as you so you can't pass easily. You're welcome. ;3 -
Imagine an engine that's being used a lot... Repeated overheating is not good. Tell your boss about the how the second thermo-dynamics also applies to people and demand better conditions, with MATH.
-
People are thermo-dynamic systems just like the rest of nature. The second law of thermo-dynamics states that you can't extract more energy from a system than you put into it; something will break down and it will not work. What do you call it when people try to use other people to make perpetual motion machines? Slavery? Like, no matter which or how many lies are used to keep people addled into submission... In fact, money itself is an attempted violation of the second law of thermo-dynamics, and that's why there is so much civil unrest, it's why the entire planet is heating up. Literally. Your work conditions are atrocious. I hope things take a better turn for you.

Aren't we just sleeping on our employer's time, then? We should get paid to sleep if we have to sell most of our time to be "enabled" to buy a tiny fraction of it back.

Whether anyone in America is an adult is debatable at this point. One portion is fascist police state and other portion has difficulty holding the former portion in check.... Thread derailed by your friendly neighborhood Last_Words
